Engstligental

Adelboden is the only important village in the small Engstligen valley. Is has been a well-known holiday resort for quite some time. The reason is obvious: the restful location at the valley's end makes this a relaxing environment with many hiking possibilities. From the village, you can walk right into the mountains, but you also have the possibility to use one of the four gondolas to reach higher situated areas or simply to admire the view. A trip to Sillerenbühl is a good example. A disadvantage of Adelboden's location, however, is that it takes quite some travelling time if you want to see more than just the Engstligen valley. In that case, you will have to travel to Frutigen by bus or by car (about 30 minutes) and then continue your journey heading for Kandersteg or Spiez.

You can travel through a magnificent valley by bus to reach Grosse Scheidegg and Grindelwald. The town of Thun functions as entrance gate of the Bernese Oberland to many travellers coming from the north of Switzerland, France and Germany. The famous mountains of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau can already be seen from here. The town can be reached by the highway and there are perfect train connections. Most of the tourists will pass Thun on their way to town such as Interlaken or Grindelwald. Nevertheless, Thun is a great resort for those who want to combine city life with the possibility to explore a large region. The capital city of Bern can be reached in 20 minutes, Interlaken in 30 minutes, Brig (in the canton of Wallis) in 75 minutes and both Grindelwald and Zürich in 90 minutes. Thun has a historic centre with a castle. It is (of course) situated at Lake Thun, so you can also make beautiful boat trips to Interlaken.
