Which rail pass to choose for family of four?

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 children ages 11 and 16) is traveling to Switzerland June 9-24, 2012. Our itinerary is as follows: Lauterbrunnen-7 nights; Zermatt-1 night; Chamonix-1 night; Italian Lakes-3 nights; Zurich-2 nights. We are renting a car for the entire trip but will make periodic train and cable car trips, including a trip to the Jungfrau and on the Gornergrat railway. Is the half price card our best option, or a Jungfrau Centennial card? Or something else? Does our 11 year old travel free with us on most lines, or do we need to request a Swiss Family Card? I'm not concerned about travel outside of Switzerland; for that we'll generally be using our car except for a few things in Chamonix. I've tried searching online to do comparisons, but often the child prices aren't listed for the train trips. Thank you for any guidance you can provide for us.

Hello dancerathlete15, and welcome to the forum! You're right, for occasional trips by public transport a Swiss Half Fare Card is definitely the best option. It offers a 50% throughout the country. The 11 year old child will travel for free if you order along a free STS Family Card; the 16 year old need his or her own Swiss Half Fare Card. All details can be found at the
Swiss Half Fare Card page
.
