Which rail pass to choose for a couple

Our tight itinerary in Swiss is as follows: Feb 4: Zurich - Luzern - Chur Feb 5: Chur - Zermatt via the same route as Glacier express's Feb 6: Zermatt - gornergrat and walk around Zermatt Feb 7: Zermatt - Spiez - Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen - Kleine Scheidegg - Grindelwald - Interlaken - Spiez Feb 8: Spiez - Bern - Montrexu - Geneva Feb 9: Walk around in Geneva Feb 10: Geneva - Lyon Is the lake tour between Interlaken and Thun unavailable during the period we visit? Is the half price card our best and the most economical option? since Swiss saver only covers for 4 or 8 days. Or something else fits us as well? Additionally, can half price card be applied on Geneve-Lyon train? Or only Eurail pass can be used on that journey? I've tried searching online to do comparisons, but often get confused. Thank you for any guidance you can provide for us.

I think a 4 day Swiss Saver Flexi Pass would be a good options, using free travel days for your long trips on February 4, 5, 7 and 8 and profiting from 50% discount on February 6. The Swiss Saver Flexi Pass's validity would end by February 8, but that's no problem since you only want to do some local trips within Geneva on February 9. If you plan an overnight stay in a hotel in Geneva, you'll even receive a free Geneva Transport Card providing unlimited use of public transport in the city. None of the Swiss rail passes would cover the trip from Geneva to Lyon, as they're only valid within Switzerland. Eurail Passes would be valid, but they would be too expensive if you only need the trip Geneva-Lyon in France. If that's the case, you're better off buying regular train tickets for that trip. Boat trips on lake Thun can't be made in February (they'll start again in April). -- Annika Moderator MySwissAlps.com

Does it mean that I have to pay for the trip starting after Interlaken on 7 Feb? I tried to get more fare information of a round trip up to Kleine Scheideggfrom SBB website but tough luck. Can you advise? Many thanks. Pathar

Jan 21, 2012 04:59:14 AM modannika Moderator Posts: 1502	Hello Pathar. Yes, between Wengen or Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg you have to pay 75% of the normal fare with a Swiss Saver Flexi Pass. Regular fares can be found by entering your trip in the Swiss timetable or at the Jungfrau railways website. The Zermatt-Wengen and Grindelwald-Spiez will be for free this day. -- Annika Moderator MySwissAlps.com
