    Hello,

Spending 2 nights at the Waldstatterhof Hotel in Lucerne with family and would like to visit Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Rigi, and/or Mt. Stanserhorn. Other suggestions welcomed. How should we prioritize visiting these mountains and can we visit more than one in one day. Suggestions for transportation (trains/boats) to accomplish more than one in one day would be greatly appreciated. Will be using Swiss Travel Passes.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It kind of depends on when you’re going. The Stanserhorn funicular & cable car don’t begin until April 7, the Pilatus cogwheel train doesn’t start until May 18 this year, although you can take the cable car/gondola up from Kriens. Trains up to Rigi seem to operate all year.

If you’re going when all are open:

Most folks take the boat from Luzern to Vitznau, then the train up to Rigi. Once at the top, you can come down the same way or take a train down the other side to Arth Goldau, then back too Luzern. Travel time is about 2 hours each way, not counting any time spent at the top. Lots of people like Rigi, but we only went once and found it kind of boring. All free with STP.

For Pilatus, we found it easier to take a train to Alpnachstad, then the cogwheel up to Pilatus, and just reverse course on the way back. That’s about 1 hour each way, not counting time at the top. Lots of infrastructure at the top, hotel, indoor restaurant/bar, gift shop, large outdoor plaza with table service, short but interesting hiking trails (longer ones too), lovely views. We did go up once from the Kriens side, but prefer the cogwheel from Alpnachstad. Cogwheel train and cable car/gondola 50% discount with STP, trains & buses are free.

Stanserhorn is also nice. Travel time is 49-62 minutes each way. The little open air funicular between Stans & the cable car base allows you to hear cowbells on the way, you can ride the open air upper deck of the cable car if you choose, cafeteria-style restaurant at the top, nice outdoor plaza, short hiking trail around the peak. You can look across a small arm of the lake and see Pilatus (and vice versa of course). All free with STP.

With an early start you could do 2 in one day, but be sure to check the schedules so you don’t miss the last train/gondola down. Ands check the mountaintop weather cams before you leave. We left Luzern once in dreary drizzly rain because Pilatus was in brilliant sunshine.

My priority would be Pilatus, Stanserhorn, Rigi. All are close to Luzern. You could go to Titlis, a little over 1 hour each way. Cable car/gondola 50% discount with STP, trains & buses are free. You could also stop at Stranserhorn on the way back since it is one of the train stations on the way back to Luzern from Engelberg. We did that once too.

Download the SBB timetable app to your phone and/or tablet. Makes it very easy to check train/bus/boat schedules if you have an Internet connection. We used Travelers WiFi for that.

    Hi DLJ1,

Thank you CabinJon for your helpful reply. As per CabinJon, depending when you are planning on visiting, the operation of cable cars and mountain transport could be closed.

Some useful links can be found here:

Depending on how long your entire trip is in Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass could be the way forward. If you are only visiting the Lucerne area, you may want to consider the Tell-Pass, with the Tell-Pass, visits to Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn are 100% covered in addition to travel within the area.
With the Swiss Travel Pass, only Rigi and Stanserhorn are covered, a visit to Pilatus would be discounted.

The timetable link will also help you plan your days a little more, that way, you can see what is doable for you and your family.

I hope this helps, feel free to reach out with any further questions.
    Kind regards
    Yolanda

Thank you very much for all of the helpful information. We will be in Luzern April 27th through April 29th and maybe plan on visiting Titlis and possibly Stanserhorn on the way back as you suggested. We have first class Swiss Travel Passes for our entire time in Switzerland and also purchased reservations for the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Looking forward to a wonderful vacation in Switzerland.

Thank you again for your help!

    Hi DJL1!

Just chiming in regarding your question about which summit to visit from Luzern. I can’t speak to Stanserhorn, but we looked into visiting Pilatus, Titlis or Rigi and chose Rigi because it was recommended as the mountain that locals were more likely to bring guests to see because of the scenic view, but also because it was less crowded and less touristy. We took the boat over to Vitznau and the cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm, where we had the most amazing view of Lakes Luzern, Zug and Lauerz! From there we hiked the Panorama Trail leading eventually to the jaw-dropping Cliff Walk and then onward to Rigi Kaltbad. We were going to take the cable car down to Weggis, but it wasn’t running for some reason do we took the train back down to Vitznau and the boat back to Luzern. It was one of our favorite days on our trip, with little restaurants, stunning views, and the constant sound of cowbells as we walked. I posted a few pictures here to show our experience! We saw many beautiful sights on our trip, but there’s a reason that Rigi is known as the Queen of the Mountains!

    Hello DJL1

In addition to the Pilatus, Rigi and Stanserhorn, I would definitely consider the Titlis mountain. It’s also very easy to get from Lucerne to Engelberg and take the cable car up there. If there is still time, you can also visit the Trübsee and Untertrübsee lakes and walk down to Engelberg from there, which is possible in 2.5 hours.

    Have a great trip

    Martin

Mt. Titlis is definitely in our plans while there. Thank you for your input!
