Will be travelling from Basel to Wengen and back by train. Based in Wengen and would be interested in easy trails in the area most days, and a day trip on one of the lakes at Interlaken. Would the Swiss Pass be the best to buy, rather than the Swiss Card which would cover the travelling to and from Basel but only gives you 50% off other transport in the area.

    Hi foxlands1964,

Both the Swiss Pass and the Swiss Card provide a 50% discount on many of the mountain trains, cable cars etc. in the Jungfrau region. But there are differences such as the boats on the lakes, as well as the trains to Wengen and Grindelwald being free with the Swiss Pass. The Jungfraujoch trip is 25% off with the Swiss Pass and 50% with the Swiss Card. You can best study the Swiss Card map and Swiss Pass map so that you can see it in detail and match it with your plans.

Personally I would prefer the Swiss Pass as it’s only CHF 46 more (assuming the Saver price for 2 or more people) and it’s more convenient. Prices and resellers are listed here.

Thanks for your reply. I think we will go with the Swiss Pass as it is more convenient and gives us more options to see the area.

    Hi,

We are in Stechelberg from the 18th for two-weeks and always buy a BeoAbo from the SBB ticket office. This give unlimited travel on local buses and cable-cars from Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg (to Grutscalp, Gimmelwald, Murren & Isenfluh where some of the best walks are) a two zone pass is 66CHf (adult fare) or 53Chf (seniors). You need a passport photo when buying.

It all depends on how how much you intend to walk. Each trip, bus or cable-car, will cost 10.40CHf return. So if you use the BeoAbo every day for a week it’s worth while and you bypass the queues at the ticket office!. Wengen to Lauterbrunnen on the train is 13.20CHf return which will not be covered on the two-zone BeoAbo but you would get half-fare with an appropriate Swiss Pass.

From Wengen you could cable-car up to Männlichen (half-fare with a pass) and walk to Kleine Scheidegg and then the 6km downhill back to Wengen or so on an easy trail.

    Tony

I didnt know about this BeoAbo ticket – never heard about it and I checked sites online and guide books. Sounds a good deal, but have committed already to the Swiss Pass for travelling to and from Basel and around the area. Many thanks for this information. May be of interest to others travelling in the area.
