We will be traveling from Lindau to Lucerne on July 5. Planning on buying the swiss half fare card as we are continuing to Wengen from Lucerne and wanted to use the half fare card for Jungfrau trip.
Can we buy tickets to Lucerne in Lindau using the swiss half fare card? Or will we need to buy tickets from Lindau to St Margrethen and get off the train to purchase tickets from St. Margrethen to Lucerne using the half fare card. I know the half fare card is only valid for travel in switzerland but didn’t know if we would have to get off the train once in Switzerland to use it.

Also can we buy a half fare card in Lindau? Read somewhere that they can be bought in Munich but didn’t see anything about Lindau. Thanks for any help.

    Hi ssflanagan,

I wouldn’t count on being able to get half fare tickets and the Swiss Half Fare Card in Lindau, but you can best ask the German railways to be 100% sure. Either way, half fare tickets are only valid from St. Margrethen onwards, as that is where the Swiss rail network starts (see the map you can download from the Swiss Half Fare Card page). So you do need a regular ticket to St. Margrethen. You can get the Swiss Half Fare Card online here (see all options here) and the half fare tickets from the SBB website. In that case you don’t need to spend time on it in either Lindau or St. Margrethen.

If you continue to Lucerne the same day, there might be cheaper options for you (e.g. the Swiss Flexi Pass) as this is quite a long trip. But it depends on your other travel plans.

    Enjoy your stay!
