    Hello,

We are a family of 4 – 2 adults 2 children (ages 7, 9). I was told that paying full price tkt is the most expensive option in switzerland. I did some comparisons between individual ticket, regional pass and 1/2 fare card and I find that indicidual ticket is the cheapest option. Would somebody be kind enough to verify my work and point out where I’m going wrong. I’ve also attached the spreadsheet I’m using. Thanks so much.

    Hello natashaover,

I just checked your Excel sheet and as far as I can see, you did a very good job making such detailed calculations! One minor thing is that a 2nd Junior Travelcard costs CHF 20,- instead of CHF 30,-, but that won’t cause major differences. Also, I noted that you listed all prices in Euros, whereas some of the pass and ticket prices you listed are actually the ones in CHF. Both currencies are pretty similar at the moment, but small shifts may occur when you re-calculate CHF prices to Euros, or the other way around.

In any case, price differences between your three options are relatively small, only about EUR 25 in total. In case of such a minor difference, I’d personally prefer to still have a rail pass. That’s because your plans can’t be set in stone. Weather or other circumstances may cause you to change your itinerary, and once you’re there you may want to include a boat trip or another trip you haven’t though of before. In that case regular ticket prices may add up quickly. Ease of use (e.g. not having to buy tickets on free travel days) is a factor to consider too. In all, the Regional Pass discussed in your previous topic would be most convenient I think. But it’s all a matter of personal preference.

    Hi Annika,

Thank you so much for checking through my work and verifying. I’m very grateful. Thank you also for your comments and views. We’ll take your advice and go with the regional pass.

    Warm Regards

For other readers, in addition to my previous post: Junior Travelcards cost CHF 30,- each and are free from the first child onward, other than stated above. Please refer to http://www.myswissalps.com/ju niortravelcard/.
