No worries katyka9. Here’s how it works:
- You can indeed purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card at any time from the retailers listed here. It makes sense to do so before Christmas as I expect prices in other currencies than CHF to rise next year. But, no guarantees!
- You can buy your discounted ticket whenever you want. You don’t need the Swiss Half Fare Card to do so. They don’t sell out.
- The only thing you do need to buy in advance is a seat reservation. They do sell out.

Thank you Arno, So to make sure that I understand. I can buy the BEX ticket once I’m in Switzerland, and I can buy it with the half fare card. However, I do need to buy in advanced the seat reservation for the BEX (which it does not have a discount).
My question: So by having a seat reservation, it guaranties me that I will get on the BEX?
is the same deal for the Centoville Railway?
Thank you!

Yes, exactly! Centovalli works like that too, although I am not sure if you actually need a reservation and/or surcharge for all trains on that line. You can check that in the timetable.
