My wife and I are celebrating 30th wedding anniversary. We are heading to Italy then Switzerland for 10 nights. First time leaving our continent.
I want to see nature and villages, tours, train rides and up to the tops of the mountains, no cities, no museums this first go.  From what I read, Interlaken is a good centralized spot. But we couldn’t find a place so we found Grindelwald. I figured we would have about 4 1/2 days here. Then go to Zermatt for about 4 1/2 days to see what’s there then back to Rome.
Unfortunately, the trains I want to take look like they may start near one of these area but not return to it. ie Glacier Express
i feel like i am missing something and need to rethink this.
I am open to ideas, suggestions.
    thank you,
    Joshua

First, congratulations on 30 years!  You couldn’t pick a better itinerary for your first trip to Europe!  This may not address your specific question but we are taking our third 7-day trip to Berner Oberland in May.  Before our first visit in 2013, someone recommended this book to us and though it is a bit dated, it will go with us on our return.  If you enjoy the outdoors you must do some hiking/walking in the mountains in this region!  Do not be intimidated though because “hiking” in this region means taking a mountain train up and then walking across the mountain to the next village. This book (see attached photo) gives you specific, almost turn by turn instructions on which train to catch to which village, how many steps to walk before turning to get to the next train, etc.  It may be available through Amazon, but also look at some of the online used booksellers (Thriftbooks,eBay, etc.)

    Enjoy!

Hi Joshua, welcome to MySwissAlps, and congratulations on your 30th anniversary!

One option to incorporate the scenic Glacier Express and Bernina Express routes into your itinerary would be to travel from Zermatt to St Moritz on the Glacier Express. After an overnight in St Moritz (or longer if you can spare the time), you could take the Bernina Express to Tirano, from where you can connect to Milan and on to Rome.

Reservations on the Glacier Express and Bernina Express are mandatory, but if you are unable to secure reservations (they are in high demand this year and can sell out), you can travel the same route on regional trains.
