I have a short visit to Lauterbrunnen coming up in August with my family. We are trying to fit in a bunch of activities, and of course trying not to go broke at the same time.

It looks like we could do the “Good Afternoon” trip to Jungfraujoch (at a discount, since we’d be using full fare tickets). The fare rules say you have to leave Kleine Scheidegg at 14:30 or later. Consulting the train schedule- we could leave Lauterbrunnen at either 13:07 or 13:37 and it looks like this works.

This would have us arriving at Jungfraujoch at 15:22- giving us just over 2 hours to explore before the last train down at 17:45.

Is 2 hours enough time to see Jungfraujoch? We won’t do any skiing or anything like that- but would like to see the ice palace and other tourist sights. Will there be any daytime left, assuming good weather?

At Kleine Scheidegg, if we got there a little early – are they strict on the fare rules? Would they let us on the 14:00 train with the good afternoon pass?

    Thanks for any advice.

Hello EricS! Yes, they’ll be strict on fare rules and times, so you can’t leave Kleine Scheidegg earlier than 14.30. Two hours should be enough to explore most attractions and you’ll still have plenty of daylight. There are two things to take into account though. First, weather circumstances generally are less clear in the afternoon than (early) in the morning in Summer. This varies each day though, so just keep an eye on recent weather forecasts before leaving from Lauterbrunnen. Second, if you plan other trips with public transportation too, you’re probably better off getting one of the Swiss rail passes than buying regular tickets. Passes such as the Swiss Card, Swiss Half Fare Card or Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland offer a good amount of discount for the expensive Jungfraujoch trip (more than Good Afternoon tickets do). Whether a pass is an economical deal over all, depends on your further plans.
