My son (11), wife and (age 62) are landing at zuriche airport on June 3 (my birthday), and we’re staying in Murren. We’d like to take the Jungfrau railway to the top of the Eiger and travel to and from Zuriche Airport, Murren and the Jungfrau area during these three days. The array of Swiss passes and tickets are so confusing. I’d like to know how to do the transportation most economically. If we rent a car we’ll have to pay parking each day–because Murren is car-free. is there are set of passes for an 11 yr old, a 62 yr old and 52 yr old that will give us round trip from Zurich Airport to Murren–and give us unlimited passage on the cable car out and in to Murren, and to the Jungfraujoch? How can I put together the most cost-effective combination of passes to enable us to travel to and from Zurich Airport–and throught the Jungfrau/Murren region?

Hello bsilver, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

I would recommend to get two Swiss Cards. It includes the trip from Zurich airport to Mürren and back for free. You’ll get a 50% discount on the other trips. The 11 year old will travel along for free.

By the way, the top of the Eiger can not be reached by any form of transportation (other than a helicopter). The Jungfrau railway will take you to the Jungfraujoch, which is in between the top of the Mönch and the Jungfrau. It’s beautiful place! Please make sure you do this trip it on a clear day.

    Have fun!

Thank you for your reply. I have more questions, if you would be so kind.
First, will the Swiss Card offer a 50% discount also on the trip to Jungfraujoch?
Second, do i need to get another card (family card??) to enable my son to travel free with us?
Third, if I rent a car and drive to the Jungfrau area, are there any tourist discounts available for rail travel in the Jungfrau region, once we get there?

    thank you.

Hi bsilver! Yes, you’ll also receive a 50% discount on the Jungfraujoch trip. You can download a validity map from the Swiss Card page, showing the area of validity. This also shows that discounts are available for lots of cable cars and mountain trains in the Jungfrau region. So if I were you, I wouldn’t rent a car. It’s really not convenient in Mürren and surroundings. Moreover, the Swiss Card allows dicounts on public transportation (it would be a waste not to use them) and the train system is very well organised.

If you want your son to travel along for free, you should indeed get a free STS Family Card. Depending on the reseller your choose (just enter your country of residence in the upper right corner of the Swiss Card page), you can order this along online or you can get it for free at a Swiss railway station.

Thanks again. We only have 3 days in the Jungfrau region. The first day we arrive is my birthday and the Jungfrau railway offers a special price of 80 chf for two persons if one is traveling on his/her birthday. So, this would be our preferred day to travel to the top of europe. If we are traveling by train from Zurich airport using the Swiss Card, can we get off at Interlocken OST and take the Jungfrau railway to the top of europe and then resume our Swiss Card transfer to Murren (which is our destination)? The website says the initial transfer from Airport to resort/destination must be in one day and must be the most “direct” route–but it doesn’t say clearly whether the traveler can interrupt that first leg of the transfer.

Secondly, if the Swiss Card will allow us to interrupt our transfer and get off at Interlocken to take the Jungfraujoch trip, can we check our luggage at the Interlaken OST railway station while we take the round trip to the Jungfraujoch?

Thirdly, the website also indicates that one can purchase the Swiss Card and receive the free STS Family Card at a Swis train station upon arrival in Switzerland. So do I assume correctly that this will be available at the Zurich Airport rail station when we arrive @ noon on Sunday, June 3?

    Hi bsilver,

The Swiss Card allows you to interrupt your trip. You can best travel via Lauterbrunnen when going up and down the Jungfrau. Put your luggage in a locker there and change to Mürren on the way back. There’s no need to go back to Interlaken again when you want to go to Mürren. That would be a detour.

Yes, the STS Family Card is available at the rail station of Zurich airport.
