If you pick up Rick Steves’ Venice guidebook, you won’t need a packaged tour. Venice is small, not like Paris or London. You can walk across it in an hour. He will give you great tips on how to avoid the big crowds and has great focused itinerary suggestions for one, two, or three days there. You walk mostly, or get a Vaporetto pass for the boat that runs up and down the grand canal. Some folks say the best of Venice, unless you’re really into great art and churches and have to see all of it, is just wandering. He’s got pre-screened hotel suggestions, too.
