My wife and I will be arriving in Zurich by air and staying the first night in Zurich. The second day we travel to Lucerne where we will stay the second and third night. the fourth day we are travelling to Mürren where we will be lodging for four nights. From Mürren we will travel to Freudenstadt, Germany in the Black Forest. Of course while in Mürren we will be traveling to nearby places. Does anyone have a suggestion as to whether we need a rail pass? and which one? or are we better off just buying point to point? Thanks for your recommendations!

    Hi Frankie,

I’m sure the experts will have good advice. In the meantime I found this discussion interesting (especially the enlarged coverage maps for alternate passes). http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/bernese-oberland-pass-or-swiss-pass

Hi Frankie and welcome to MySwissAlps!

There are 2 passes you could look at for Switzerland. The Swiss Travel Pass or the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland. The B.O. pass is valid for 4,6,8 or 10 days while the STP is 3, 4, 8 or 15 days. The B.O pass will cover most trips you take after you reach Luzern (local German spelling) so not around Zurich, while the STP will cover most/all of your trips within Switzerland. Be sure to click on the “where it’s valid” tab on both information pages that I linked.

Also, be sure to check out our page on “How to choose the best rail pass” as you can use an excel sheet to do the math so you can compare the tickets prices for each trip vs. a rail pass.

I hope this helps, let us know if you have more questions on this!

    Lucas
