It is not becoming clear as to what is the criteria to say whether reservation is required in addition to pass or not and how to get the reservation. Further, after every train number, abbreviations like R, IR, IC, RE etc is shown. Whether these abbreviations indicate that the pass is valid to cover these trains. Further whether these abbreviations indicate whether the reservation is required or not?

    Hi jogijsr,

In general, reservations are not necessary for traveling by train in Switzerland. Reservations are necessary though for trips with touristical (panoramic) trains, like the Golden Pass, Bernina Express, Glacier Express, etc. and for international train rides. For specifics you might want to take a look at this page.
The need to make reservations does not depend on whether you have a pass or not.

    Abbrevations:
    R: Regional train
IR: Interregional train (does not stop at all stations)
    IC: InterCity
    RE: Regional Express

The Timetable on this website will be of further help.
