We plan on staying for 3 days and doing most of our activities in Interlaken. If we stay in Beatonburg and have a car, is it easy to drive to and from Interlaken area??

What activities are you doing in Interlaken?

Why are you basing in Beatenberg?

What time of year will you visit?

We are 2 adults ages 50 travelling with 2 teens ages 17. Our travelling will be done end of June, beginning of July for about 3 nights. We are looking at doing some hiking, the suspension bridge and possibly the Jungfrau trip. Beatonberg seems to have more budget accomadations. We were thinking of staying in an apartment as we could provide our own meals. I’m not sure staying in the hostel in Interlaken would make us feel out of place for us adults? We do like to socialize and are very active. What are your thoughts?

So it appears that you will not be doing activities in Interlaken. Interlaken is a good place to change trains but that is about it. There really aren’t any attractions in Interlaken, it is full of tour busses, questionable restaurants, souvenir shops and a casino. It is not in the mountains nor on a lake.

Most people that visit the region come for the mountains so it is far better to stay in the mountains than down in the flats. Recommend that you look to Lauterbrunnen as a better base as it sits in the valley right at the foot of the Alps. The car-free mountain villages of Wengen or Mürren are stunning but there are more budget locations in Lauterbrunnen. Suggest you look into Valley Hostel and Camping Jungfrau (they have rooms and bungalows for rent as well) in Lauterbrunnen. Many adults stay at Valley Hostel. It is simple but well regarded. Or apartment rentals at http://www.homeaway.com/vacat ion-rentals/switzerland/la uterbrunnen/r778 or use the tourist office website at mylauterbrunnen.com/en /Holidays/ACCOMMODATIO N/Holiday_Apartments

Alternatively look into Chalet Fontana in Mürren, see http://www.ferntree.ch/chalet /fontana_summer.htm.
