We are an elderly couple travelling to Switzerland for thirteen days, landing in Zurich and flight back home from Milano Linate. It has driven us crazy to find the right rail pass for us, with so many passes and cards available. We have finally decided that the Swiss Saver Flexi bus is best for us, but still have our doubts. So we need your opinion please if we actually did make the right choice. Our trip is going to be in September. This is our itenerary

Arriving late afternoon and so spending the night in Zurich.
2nd day Zurich – Zermatt 1st day using the Saver Flexi Pass. Visiting Gornergrat in the afternoon(half price)
3rd day up to the Matterhorn and going round Zermatt (flexi pass used as half card)
4th day Glacier Express (pay reservation fee) to St. Moritz (2nd day use of Saver Flexi Pass).
5th to 9th spending in St. Moritz. Hotel offering full transport complimentary ticket, but will be going a day in Livigno using the Flexi Pass as half card.
On the 9th travel to Poschiavo where we`re spending a night in Poschiavo taking a train to Cavaglia (Flexi pass used as h/card)
10th Poschiavo to Tirano and Bernina Bus (pay for reservation) to Lugano (3rd day use).
11th taking an offer of 2 for 1 if we make use of our 4th day (2 for 1 Saver Flexi pass) in Lugano for a guided tour to Mt. Salvatore, 2hrs walk to Swissminiatur and a boat trip back to Paradiso for 33chf for both.
12th Go up Mt. Bre and then on to Milan using the Flexi Card as h/crd for Mt. Bre and up to Chiasso.

We hope we made our homework well, but if there are any days that are not covered in any way, are there any day passes we may make use of please?

We also understand that we cannot buy the Saver Flexi Pass on arrival? If this is correct, is it possible to tell us, what will be the charge if we ask for them to be delivered to our first hotel, always if this will not be a problem for them.

Thank you for the help you give us, because we get loads of it through reading your forum in planning our holiday in Switzerland.

    Marie

Welcome marie! I think the Swiss Saver Flexi Pass is a great choice. You definitely understood how the pass works, except that it’s no longer valid after the last free travel day. This means you can’t use your pass anymore on September 12 and that you’ll have to buy regular tickets for your trips that day. So it may be more economical to make use of discounts on September 11 and use your fourth and last free travel day for September 12.

The 2 for 1 deal should indeed be purchased online. Please visit the Swiss Flexi Pass page, fill out your country of residence in the upper right corner of the page and select the 2 for 1 deal. All purchase options will be displayed then. If you click ‘Show more information’, details on delivery dates and costs will be displayed. You’ll have plenty of time to have the passes delivered to your home address, but if you want to have your pass delivered to a hotel in Switzerland, fill out Switzerland as your country of residence instead. If you let me know your country of residence, I can provide a direct purchase link too if that’s easier.

    Hi!
Thank you for confirming that what we chose was the best pass for us. That is really a big headache settled. And thanks for getting our attention for the 12th day not being covered by any pass.
Here we have a choice, if we are right. It is either we take your suggestion in using the last day of the pass on the 11th day, or it is also possible to change the excursions, meaning we do the Mt. Salvatore, Melide and boat trip on the 12th and do Mount Bre on the 11th, no?
The only problem with this is, that the (guided) boat trip back to Paradiso starts at 15:15. We do not know how long it takes to get from Melide to Lugano Paradiso. Then we have to get out luggages from the hotel, which is in fact in Paradiso and get on the train to Milan.

Is it possible to tell us, if on arriving in Milan, will we have enough time to at least see the Duomo from Milano Centrale? I mean will there be people around on the streets of Milan, if we arrive late in the evening? Our hotel in Milan is very near to the station. We will fly home the next day in the morning and will have no time to do any touring. We would sure like to be able to see the Duomo once we are so near.

As regards the delivery of the pass, we have already asked our first hotel, and have gently accepted to receive and keep it for us. Thank you for the help you were ready to give us anyway.

Please excuse my mistake in writing `bus` instead of Pass in the heading.

Hello Marie. Is this the guided tour to Monte San Salvatore and Swissminiatur you’re referring to? It doesn’t seem to be available on either September 11 or 12, so it looks like you’ll have to adapt your plans anyway. The train trip to Milano takes about 1 hour. If you want to have time to visit the town center and the cathedral in a relaxed way, I’d make sure to arrive at Milano in the afternoon, leaving from Lugano about 15h00. If you plan your own trip to Monte San Salvatore and Swissminiatur, leaving and returning rather early, this can also be done on September 12.

By the way, I made a mistake when mentioning that you could fill out Switzerland as your country to see delivery options for Switzerland; this option doesn’t work in our price overview (yet). But here's a direct purchase link to our partner delivering passes at low shipping costs to (hotel) addresses in Switzerland.

    Hi Annika,
Yes, that is the one. I guess we have made a mistake, but I think the difference will not come to a lot, moneywise, and it would fit us better because we can follow your advice and depart the earliest possible for Milano.
Thanks for the link. We will sure use it when ordering our pass.
Your forum has helped us so much that it seems that all our questions and doubts are cleared now, so a Big Thank You.
Nothing to do now, just order the pass and wait anxiously to be in Switzerland!!
    Regards,
    Marie
