We are a family of 5 (kids 7,10,12) flying into Zurich in early December to go Skiing in Zermatt. I’m a bit confused about the Swiss Transfer ticket. (we are canadians) We are planning on travelling by rail from Zurich to Zermatt on Dec 12…but on December 19 we wanted to to the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur, and then continue onto Zurich that same day by regular rail. Can you use the Swiss transfer ticket on the GE? If you can’t, what would our best option be for rail tickets. We do want to take the GE.

    thanks for your advice.

Welcome to MySwissAlps, swissmama! The Swiss Transfer Ticket requires you to take the shortest or cheapest route from your resort to the border or airport, as displayed by the timetable. Zermatt-Chur-Zurich is a detour and thus doesn’t qualify for that.

If you don’t want to be restricted in the routes you use, you can consider a 3 day Swiss Saver Flexi Pass or a Swiss Half Fare Card. The 3 day Swiss Flexi Pass offers 3 days of free traveling throughout the country, two of which can be used for the trips Zurich-Zermatt and Zermatt-Chur-Zurich. You’d have one free travel day left, which could be useful if you’ve planned a somewhat longer day trip during your stay in Zermatt. The Swiss Half Fare Card gives 50% off of all trips during your stay. If you want to be sure which pass is cheapest for your plans, you should make calculations as explained here.

I hope this helps you decide. Have fun preparing for your winter sports holiday!
