That will be a very nice train ride of 2 hrs 30 minutes to 2 hours and 45 minutes. You will go over the Gotthard pass, which is one of the best train rides in Switzerland.

We spent 3 days in Lugano a few years ago.

We enjoyed a lake boat ride, including a visit to Morcote, which is an attractive small village.

We also found the Swiss Customs Museum to be a surprisingly pleasant excursion. it was interesting for us to see the various ways that smugglers used to cross the border, as well as other information about protecting the border.

A walk from the harbor/shore line at Lugano to Gandria is quite popular, and we enjoyed doing that, looking around Gandria, then catching the lake boat back to Lugano or across to the Swiss Customs Museum.
