Hello – a family of 5, all over 16, arrive Zurich airport on day 1. They need to take train to Basel. On day 5, they need to travel Basel to Como (Italy). We will go into Basel by tram a few times but also do Wasserfallen and Lucern/ Pilatus. Is the Swiss Travel pass Flex the best option? Will the train from Basel to Como be covered? If so, how does one book that kind of train trip to get seats reserved?

    Hi BWise, welcome to MySwissAlps,

In many cases either a Swiss Travel Pass or a Swiss Half Fare Card works out cheaper than a Swiss Travel Pass Flex. My estimation would be that the Swiss Half Fare Card is best in your case, but the only way to know for sure is to do the math. Note that if anyone in your family is under 26, they can get the cheaper youth version of the Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Travel Pass Flex.

Basel to Como is covered until Chiasso, so that’s almost the whole journey. You need additional tickets from Chiasso to Como. Seat reservations are not required for most trains, please see here.

You can order the passes from http://www.swissrailways.com and print them yourself.
