    Hello Arno and Annika!

We are planning a day trip to Zermatt from Interlaken in July and need your suggestions if feasible or not.

We are staying in Interlaken from 6th night to 10th July morning.

Based on weather forecast, we are thinking of taking 7:05am train from Interlaken West which reaches Zermatt 9:13am. Would like to take Gornergrat bahn from Zermatt, 9:36am. and back. Will it be possible to fit in a hike from Rotenboden to Riffleberg on our journey to or way back from Gornergrat at that time of the year? We are a family of 4, 2 adults in early 40s and 2 children 10yr and 15yr old. The younger one is motion sick and am not sure if we should take the Gornergrat bahn immediately after reaching Zermatt or maybe spend sometime in the Matterhorn museum or visit Sunegga first!

We are taking an 8day Swiss Pass. Just want to make sure if we would be getting a discount of 50% on individual adult return tickets worth 86 Euro (making it 43 Euro) while the children go free with the family pass on the Gornergrat bahn! Would also like to know if Zermatt to Sunegga is a free ride! and how to reach Leisee lake from Sunegga?

On our way back to Interlaken, would like to take the Lotschberg Express via Kandersteg. Will that be possible. Please share your thoughts on the itinerary. Thanks and regards!

    Hi mistybabu,

All of this is doable in a day, but it will be a long day. You can check the timetable for how long all trips take. Rotenboden to Riffelberg is a very short hike, but enough to experience the area. Please see myswissalps.com/ hiking/rotenboden-riffelalp for a map and a route that continues to Riffelalp.

You will get 50% off all cable car and train rides around Zermatt. The Swiss Travel Pass map shows all details. Indeed the children ride along for free.

    Have a wonderful day!

    Hello!

Thanks! If we reach Zermatt at 10:13am, do you think we can take the Gornergrat cogwheel at 10:24. We need to purchase the discounted tickets with our swiss pass. Also if we are hiking from Rotenboden to Riffleberg, do we need to consult with the tourist office at the Zermatt station! Waiting for your valuable advice. Thanks again!

Hi mistybabu! You should be able to catch the 10.24 train, as the Gornergrat station is right across the regular railway station in Zermatt. The next one leaves at 10.48.

Unless there have been extreme local weather circumstances, you don’t need to consult the tourist office to make this short hike.

    Hi Annika n Arno!

Can’t thank you well enough for all the help! 🙂

    Would like to clarify on:

    1. Lotscherberg express from Visp to Spiez is covered by Swiss Pass as it is shown dotted.

    2. Same for journey to Engelberg from Luzern.

    Good day!

    Hi mistybabu,

We’re glad to help! You can thank us by posting a short trip report once you’re back, that would be wonderful.

Both trains are fully covered. The dots are just a tunnel section. You can find an explanation of all the details on myswissalps.com/ swisstravelpass/ validity.

The Lötschberger train departs from Brig, not from Visp.
