Would like to take a day trip to either Zermatt or St. Moritz late March 2014 from Milan. Yes, we know it will be a long day, but unfortunately, we don’t have more time to spend in Switzerland. We can take an early train from Milan to Tirano and then up to St. Moritz on the regional train, coming back down through Chiavenna and Colico into Milan. Is it doable to go from Milan to Zermatt in a day? Is it better to head to Zermatt vs. St. Moritz? Any idea on what it costs (USD)? Thanks!

Hi travelbug! Did you check the timetable I recommended in your previous post? As you’ll see, getting to Zermatt makes more sense, as the trip from Milan is shorter. Traveling to St. Moritz and back in one day means you’ll be traveling about 10 to 11 hours. If you leave early and don’t mind returning late, you can even visit a viewing point like Gornergrat, Sunnegga or Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt if weather is good. Prices can be found through the timetable too. Just pick a connection and click ‘Fare/Buy’. Don’t forget to the select the full fare option (half fare prices are displayed by default).

This topic may be of interest as well.
