Weisshorn

"See over 100 km (62 miles) around"

Arosa

Weisshorn
The Weisshorn is a very special part of Switzerland. It is certainly not the highest viewing point of the country, but its situation is unique. You can see a great number of mountains as well as the city of Chur, far away in the valley. When the weather is clear you will be able to see exceptionally far. You can even see the Jungfrau, which is situated more than 125 km (77 miles) away, in the Bernese Oberland. The view is a bit simular to the view at the Parpaner Rothorn. It is a five minute walk from the railway station in Arosa to the gondola station.

Shopping in Chur

"Shopping in an old town"

Chur

Chur
Picture: PicSwiss.

The center of Chur consists of two parts. The newer part is near the train station, where you will also come across the larger department stores. The historical part of the city, with its nice little squares, narrow streets and smaller shops is situated a bit further downtown. Chur is one of the few places in Graubünden where a firm number of shops can be found. Furthermore you will find quite a number of restaurants and pubs here.

Parpaner Rothorn

"Active or educational at 2,800 m (9,186 ft) over sea"

Lenzerheide

Parpaner Rothorn
The view from the Parpaner Rothorn is a bit similar to the view from the Weisshorn near Arosa. These viewing points are only a few kilometers apart from each other, but the travelling time is a couple of hours, because it is not possible to travel directly from one point to the other. Besides the beautiful view the Parpaner Rothorn offers you information about ecology by signs and cut-aways in the rocks. There is the possibility of a descend in a sportsmanlike manner: by mountain-bike. This is only suitable for well-trained sportsmen. The gondola station lies a few kilometers outside Lenzerheide and can be reached by car or bus.

Diavolezza

"The most famous panoramic view of Graubünden"

Pontresina

Diavolezza
You certainly do not want to miss the view from the Diavolezza (2,973 m, 9,754 ft). You will meet the snow-covered world of among others the Piz Bernina (4,049 m, 13,284 ft), the Piz Zupò (3,996 m, 13,110 ft) and the Piz Palü (3,901 m, 12,799 ft). The viewing point itself may, also in summer, be covered with a thick layer of snow.

Muottas Muragl

"Sunset over the Oberengadin"

Pontresina

Muottas Muragl
You will find a hotel-restaurant with a terrace and a small play-garden at Muottas Muragl. There is a beautiful view of the Bernina valley and the Rosegg valley. The towns of Celerina, St.Moritz and the lakes behind it can be seen very well. Muottas Muragl is an excellent starting point for hikes. For example, there is a beautiful trail from Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard above Pontresina. The funicular is one of the few that run during evening hours as well. This makes it possible to witness the sunset from a considerable height, even while enjoying dinner. The funicular leaves from Punt Muragl. You can park your car here, but there are a bus stop and a small train station as well.

Piz Corvatsch

"365 days a year of wintersports"

St.Moritz

Piz Corvatsch
The gondola to the Corvatsch takes you to the highest reachable point of Graubünden. On a height of 3,303 m (10,837 ft) you can enjoy a scenic view of snow-covered mountain tops, among which the Piz Bernina (4,049 m, 13,284 ft). The gondola does not end at the top of Piz Corvatsch, but it can be reached by climbing it yourself. Good shoes and clothing are absolutely necessary if you want to take the hike on this snow-covered trail. The station Murtel (2,699 m, 8,855 ft) is situated between the valley and the mountain station. This is a starting point for several hikes, e.g. to Furtschellas. The valley station is in the village of Surlej and can be reached from St.Moritz by bus. There is a large parking lot as well.

Piz Nair

"The top of St.Moritz"

St.Moritz

Piz Nair
A funicular takes you from downtown St. Moritz to the station of Chantarella, right above the city. You have to change trains here to get to Corviglia. Finally, a completely renewed gondola takes you close to the top of Piz Nair (3,056 m, 10,026 ft). There is a grand view of St. Moritz-Bad and the lakes in the valley. At the opposite side of the valley you can see the mountain station of the Corvatsch. Piz Nair is a starting point for beautiful hikes such as Piz Nair - Bever.

Shopping in St.Moritz

"Shopping in style"

St.Moritz

St.Moritz has the most extended and luxury shopping possibilities in the wide area. The town consists of St.Moritz-Dorf (the city) and St.Moritz-Bad. The train station is situated in St.Moritz-Dorf. It is a 10 minute walk from the train station to the city center, where many shops can be found. There is a sufficient number of restaurants to have lunch, and if you like you can take a short walk on the promenade along the lake. St.Moritz-Bad can be reached by bus or by foot. The shopping possibilities are a bit limited here. The largest supermarket in town is located along the way between St.Moritz-Dorf and St.Moritz-Bad.

Bernina Express

"An impressive journey to Mediterranean regions"

Chur - Filisur - Pontresina - Tirano

Bernina Express
From way back, the Bernina Express is the train to traverse Graubünden. Nowadays, several Bernina Expresses are scheduled by the Rhätische Bahn daily, mainly in summer. The classic route runs from Chur through Thusis, Filisur, Pontresina and Poschiavo to Tirano. This trip will take about four hours. After leaving Chur the train soon enters a green valley. A firm number of old fortresses can be found in this area. Just before Filisur the train crosses the famous Landwasser viaduct. It runs on the slopes of the mountains, parallel to the little river Albula, and keeps gaining height. Additional vertical meters are being gained in some spiral-tunnels. The tunnel under the Albulapass starts immediately after Preda. The train reaches the Bever valley at the other side, and after that the wide valley of the Oberengadin. After Pontresina, height must be gained again. The train passes the magnificent Morteratsch glacier on its way to the Berninapass. Once on the Berninapass, you are high above the timber-line. The train runs along lake Lago Bianco, which owes its name to the fact that it is completely frozen over in winter. After that a long descend follows to the Poschiavo valley, where you will meet the Italian culture with palm trees and vineyards. There is a very special construction just outside Brusio: a circular viaduct. You will be able to see the front of the train while sitting in the end. This train journey ends some kilometers into Italy, in Tirano. It is recommended to make reservations for the Bernina Express, in some cases this is obligatory.

Glacier Express

"Traverse Switzerland by a world-famous train"

Disentis/Mustér - Chur - Filisur - St.Moritz

There is no doubt about it: the most famous Swiss train is the Glacier Express. This 'slowest express train in the world' is for travellers who prefer the beauty of the scenery over the speed of travelling. The train starts in Zermatt (canton of Wallis) and runs through Brig, Andermatt, Disentis/Mustér, Chur and Filisur to St. Moritz in Graubünden. This trip takes a whole day. If you stay both in Wallis and in Graubünden during your holidays, this train is an excellent way of changing cantons. If you stay in Graubünden only, then you might want to consider to ride along just a section of the route, for example from Disentis/Mustér to St. Moritz.
After leaving Zermatt the train descends into the beautiful Mattertal valley, and reaches the wide Rhône valley at Visp. Brig will be reached afer a short while, at a platform which is situated at the train station square, in front of the actual train station building. The train is gaining height again after leaving Brig, while the Rhône valley becomes more narrow. After Andermatt the train climbs up the Oberalppass, where the river Rhine and the river Rhône take their rise. The train descends into the Rhine valley where white rock walls can be seen after Ilanz. This part of the Rhine is also called 'The Swiss Grand Canyon'. After a stop in Chur the train will turn in order to run back some kilometers in the opposite direction. It enters a green valley just after Reichenau. St.Moritz will be reached a bit later.
An interesting consideration is that this train runs due to the cooperation of three railway companies: between Zermatt and Disentis/Mustér the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is responsible, and after that the Rhätische Bahn (RhB) takes over. It is recommended to make reservations for the Glacier Express, in some cases this is obligatory.

Heidi Express

"Discover Graubünden in a couple of hours"

Landquart - Davos - Filisur - Pontresina - Tirano

Heidi Express
A trip with the Heidi Express can be compared to a trip with the Bernina Express. The first part of the way however, is different. This train starts in Landquart and runs through Klosters and Davos to Filisur, Pontresina and Tirano. The route between Landquart and Filisur runs through the fresh green region of Prättigau. The train does not cross the famous Landwasser viaduct, but it does cross another train-arch, the Wiesner viaduct, just after the station of Wiesen. It is recommended to make reservations for the Heidi Express, in some cases this is obligatory.

Go out for dinner in a train

"Culinary pleasures and a magnificent view"

Chur - Filisur - St.Moritz (for example)

Combining your dinner and your journey does not only save time, it is simply very enjoyable. Particularly Intercity trains and international trains are provided with a restaurant car throughout the country. For example, in Graubünden this counts for a number of fast trains on the route Chur - Thusis - Filisur - St.Moritz, and in some cases for the Glacier Express. The train personnel can serve you a fine meal, and in the meantime you can enjoy the scenery. Prices can be compared to restaurant prices. You can check the time table in order to find trains that carry a restaurant car.
