Introduction

During this hike, you will gradually descend from just above the tree line to just beneath it. There are great vistas along the way. You can terminate your hike sooner by taking the gondola down to the train station in Betten from Bettmeralp. You will not see the Grosser Aletsch glacier during this hike, but there are several possibilities to break your hike by taking a gondola up to enjoy the great view of this glacier (refer to the map).

Transportation to Fiescheralp

Fiesch can be reached by train or by car. A five minute walk is required to get from the train station to the gondola to the Eggishorn. You need to get off at the halfway station of Fiescheralp. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

The gondola takes you to the winter sports settlement of Kühboden. You need to leave the village in the direction of Bettmeralp. The main route to Bettmeralp continues straight on just outside the village (thin route on the map), but it is more fun to take an alternative path. However, this path is a bit more difficult. You need to follow the sign to the Bettmerhorn. Keep to the left from now so that you will not walk to the Bettmerhorn. A small lake shows up as you stand on a hill. After a short descent, you will pass the lake on its left bank. You will cross a gondola route and afterwards there are several paths to get back to the main path to Bettmeralp. Then you enter the holiday village of Bettmeralp. Keep following the main road. The bare landscape makes room for woods as you arrive at you final destination Riederalp.

Transportation from Riederalp

From Riederalp, the gondola takes you to the train station of Mörel. You can take the train to Fiesch/Oberwald or Brig from there.
