Introduction

During this hike, you will follow the way of the stream called Reichenbach until the Reichenbachfall, where the water rumbles down over 100 m (330 ft). The hike starts at Grosse Scheidegg, at the base of the Wetterhorn. You can enjoy a beautiful view of, among others, the Eiger. You will cross meadows and forests on your way, and every now and then there is a great view on the sometimes fantastic shaped rock formations on both sides of the valley.

Transportation to Grosse Scheidegg

You will first travel to Grindelwald by car or by train. Take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg from there. There are a number of bus services from Meiringen to Grosse Scheidegg as well. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

Just follow the sign posts until you arrive at the Reichenbachfall. Sometimes, you have to walk on the road for a short while. You will pass the Gletscherschlucht Rosenlaui about halfway, where you can see how the melting water of the Rosenlaui-glacier worms its way through a narrow canyon (on payment). You have descended about 1,100 m (3,600 ft) from Grosse Scheidegg when you arrive at the Reichenbachfall. You will pass the waterfalls before you reach the mountain station of the funicular. The funicular saves you from descending even more and takes you to the Haslital valley, where it is a 20 minute walk to the railway station in Meiringen.

Transportation from Meiringen

Trains to Brienz – Interlaken and Sarnen – Luzern leave from Meiringen, and trains to Innertkirchen leave from a separate small station in Meiringen.
