Introduction

You will pass by a lot of churches and chapels on this trail in the valley around the tourist resorts of Saas Grund and Saas Fee. In all, there are 3 churches and 16 chapels to view. Furthermore, you will walk through forests and along the river of Saaser Vispa. At the end of the trail, you will pass by a lake filled with water from melting glaciers in the high mountains. There are plenty of opportunities to break your hike and take a gondola up to a viewing point. There is a gondola to Hohsaas from Unter dem Berg, and there are several gondolas from Saas Fee.

Transportation to Unter dem Berg

Unter dem Berg can be reached by car or by bus from Saas Fee or from Stalden/Visp. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

Walk from the bus stop in Unter dem Berg to the church about 100 m (300 ft) down the road. Follow the signs to Unter dem Berg Talstation from here. From the gondola station, follow the signs to Saas Grund Post. After the church and bus stop in Saas Grund, turn right to Saas Fee, as indicated by the signpost for car traffic. Just before the bridge, on the right side, start following the signs to Saas Fee (Kapellenweg). You will now walk on the left bank of the Saaser Vispa. Cross the bridge after about 750 m (2500 ft) and keep heading for Saas Fee (Kapellenweg). At the fork, turn right into an ascending path. From this point on, there are 15 small chapels and a larger one the be seen. They were built between 1708 and 1711. Just before Saas Fee, turn into the left path to Saas Fee. You will reach the town via a narrow asphalt road. Turn right at the end of this road. You will pass the post office/bus station as you are heading for Wildi/Dorfrundweg. Turn left at hotel Allalin. Keep following the shopping street and turn right to Hannig after the church. Follow the asphalt road up the hill. The signs to Hannig will lead you to a forest trail. Once you are on this trail, take the first path on your left. Further on, walk straight ahead following the signs Dorfrundweg. You will cross a bridge and follow the signs to the Gletschersee. From the lake, follow the signs to Saas Fee. At an intersection, turn right to Dorfrundweg into the descending path along the river. You will cross a bridge and follow the sign Dorfrundweg to the right. Turn left into the wide gravel path and turn right at the asphalt road. Keep heading for Saas Fee now. Once in Saas Fee, follow the signs to the bus station. You will pass by the Metro Alpin (to the panoramic restaurant Allalin) and cross a bridge high over the river of Feevispa.

Transportation from Saas Fee

You can leave the car free town of Saas Fee by bus to Saas Grund/Stalden/Visp. Note that the buses depart from the bus station hall, not from the square.
