Introduction

This varied and easy route gives a good impression of the direct surroundings of the village of Frutigen. You will first pass the village’s centre on your way to a small district with chalets and farms. Then, after having walked through the forest and along the river Engstlige, you will reach the hamlet of Reinisch, where the route continues through meadows to the Tellenburg ruin. A path passing the small town of Rybrügg will then lead you to Kanderbrück and back to Frutigen. The Tellenburg ruin is situated on a small hill and therefore offers a wonderful view over the Kander valley and the Kander viaduct, used by trains heading for Kandersteg. You might even want to climb the ruin’s tower for a more spectacular view.

Transportation to Frutigen

Frutigen can be reached by train or car from Spiez and Kandersteg/Brig. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

At the Frutigen railway station, walk straight ahead into the footpath to Adelboden; a bit later on, this path runs along the river Engstlige. Turn right at the end of the Schulhausstrasse and follow the main road to Adelboden. When you have turned left at the fork, turn right into the Kirchgasse and follow the signs to Oberfeld. Further on, at the Bodenweg, turn left to the Gantenbachbrücke. You will keep following this direction through the Ahornstrasse, until you reach the Stockweg and the bridge. Cross this bridge and turn left. At the end of the Prastenstrasse you will have to cross the main road diagonally to the left. Keep following this narrow asphalt road through the forest until you see a footpath leading to a small bridge on your left. Walk towards this bridge, but do not cross it; you will have to take the forest path to the right and then follow the asphalt road to the bridges over the river Engstlige. Across the river, turn right towards Reinisch, following a footpath that will make a sharp bend upwards. Follow the road through Reinisch until you reach the broader Trummerliweg. Turn left over here, and then immediately turn right to Tellenburg. After having visited the Tellenburg ruin, you will descend to Rybrügg, where you have to cross the main road by using the pedestrian underpass. Proceed your route towards Rüteni. Turn left after you have walked under the railway bridge. From Kanderbrück, follow the signs to the railway station of Frutigen.
