Introduction

This is a beautiful hike, with a wonderful view over the village of Kandersteg right at the beginning at Allmenalp. About 20 minutes later you will have a splendid panorama of the Balmhorn and Rinderhorn. On your way to Kandersteg, you will moreover have a sight at the Oeschinen lake and the Gastern valley. You will first walk near the tree line and then end up at a forest path running along the wild Alpbach river, surrounded by canyon-like high rockwalls on the other side. The last part of this hike runs through the valley and is nearly flat. Most of the paths are easy, but because of the rocky descending trail from Usser Üschene to Eggeschwand this hike has been categorized as ‘difficult’.

Transportation to Allmenalp

Allmenalp is to be reached by a gondola, leaving just outside the village of Kandersteg. The gondola valley station can be reached by car or by a 25 minute walk from Kandersteg’s railway station. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

Follow the signs indicating the shorter route to Usser Üschene. When the path splits up, take the path on the left towards Usser Üschene and keep following this direction. At Usser Üschene, there is a short road running towards Kandersteg; don’t turn into this road and keep walking straight ahead in the direction of Inner Ueschinen, also at the three-forked road. At the point where a path turns right towards Adelboden, you will turn into the left path that gradually descends, almost in the direction you came from. This path runs to Eggeschwand. Keep following this direction. From Rüeggerscher, follow the signs to Kandersteg and then walk to the gondola station of Eggeschwand. This gondola runs up to Sunnbüel. Approximately 50 m (160 ft) after the station, turn right to Kandersteg. The path runs along railway tracks, enters the forest a bit further on and then crosses the Lötschberg tunnel’s entrance. The path bends to the left and continues across a camping site. At the end of the camping site and of the path, turn left under the railway to Käsmilchbrücke. Over there, turn right into the Wagetiweg in the direction of Kandersteg/Allmenalp. Keep following the direction of Kandersteg through the path running along the river the Kander. At the end of the path, turn left to ‘Luftseilbahn Allmenalp’ or right to Kandersteg’s railway station.

Transportation from Kandersteg

The route ends in the valley at the gondola station. You can also walk to the railway station in order to travel to Spiez or Brig by train.
