Introduction

There are various hiking possibilities from First (pronounce as ‘Fierst’). Some of the routes lead to other mountain tops or gondola stations, but you might want to make an easy trip leading back to First. Walking to the Bachsee is a good choice. This small mountain lake is situated on the foot of the Faulhorn. Even in summer, there may be ice floating on the lake. Your way towards the lake starts with an ascent but the remaining is pretty easy because of the wide and even path. At the shore of the lake you can rest and enjoy the splendid view of several peaks such as the Schreckhorn (4,078 m, 13,379 ft). The Bachsee is popular and therefore visited by many people. One of the reasons may be that this path offers the passage to one of the most popular hiking routes in the Bernese Oberland: the one from First to Schynige Platte.

Transportation to First

You will first travel to Grindelwald by car or by train. A 15 minute walk is required to get from the train station to the gondola that takes you up to First. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

Follow the signs to the Bachsee, and take the same route back.
