Introduction

During this hike you will cross the forests and meadows of the fresh, green Kander valley. You will pass small hamlets and typically Swiss chalets. During a large part of the route, you will have the river Kander on your left side; you will also have a splendid view of the mountains at the valley’s end. Near Blausee you will see several small waterfalls, and moreover you will walk through a wonderful piece of forest which is very typical of Blausee’s surroundings. Your ending point, Blausee, is definitely worth a visit (please refer to the section Day trips for details). You may choose to continue your journey by foot or by bus to the village of Kandersteg, situated at the end of the valley, at the base of the mountains. Here you will find several cable cars and hiking possibilities.

Transportation to Frutigen

Frutigen can be reached by train or car from Spiez and Kandersteg/Brig. Will you be traveling to and from hiking areas frequently? A Swiss Pass or one of the other passes grants easy access to the entire Swiss Travel System (trains, buses, boats and mountain transportation).

Route description

Your hiking route starts off at Frutigen’s railway station. During the hike you will follow the yellow signs to Blausee, following the shortest of several routes indicated on these signs. Turn left from the railway station, walking along the Untere Bahnhofstrasse. Then turn left into the Baumgartenstrasse, with a view on the railway tracks beneath you on the left. Walk through this alley until you reach the broad bridge over the railway track. Cross this bridge, and then cross the main road until you reach the smaller Isliweg. Follow this asphalt path through meadows and along chalets and continue your route into the Wallisgasse. Cross the little river and follow the curve of this street. Turn right into the Mühligässli. Then follow the small path heading towards the Kander viaduct, with the Kander river on your right and meadows on your left. Walk underneath the railway viaduct and shortly after cross the main road, using the pedestrian tunnel. When have come out of this tunnel, you will first have to cross the river again; then immediately turn left into the broad hiking path, now having the river on your left. You will follow this path through meadows, along chalets and through pieces of forest. After a while, at Inner Kandergrund, you will pass some water pipes that lead down from the hills at your right. Keep following the same path, until you can turn left into a path, leading you to a piece of forest where you will cross the Kander river once more; then turn left. Along the forests and some chalets you will eventually reach the main road. Cross the road until and turn left. Soon after, you will see Blausee’s parking lot on your left. You will also find a bus stop here.
