    Hiya – A Newbie Here !!

We are spending a few days with friends in Zurich the week before Christmas and plan on seeing the sites in the area & the local Christmas markets….

In order to see a bit more of the country, we plan on flying back from Geneva – Whilst I appreciate the easiest & quickest route is the direct motorway, it will be a shame not to see more…therefore I thought about taking the scenic route….collect the hire car from Zurich airport approx 09.30 & drop it off at Geneva airport approcx 19.30 (on the same day)

If we wanted to take in some of the passes (such as Juan Pass) would they be open ?

If not, can you suggest any pretty route options in December

    Many thanks

    Goose

Hi Goose and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I think traveling by train to Geneva will provide you with more scenery (and a more relaxed travel experience) rather than trying to drive any Alpen passes that are open (most are not but the Jaun pass isn’t too high and may be ok).

A one-way car rental may be quite expensive as well – something to look into.

I’d personally look at a train trip on the Golden Pass route. The route starts in Lucerne and takes you to Montreux (via Interlaken and Zweisimmen). Have a read about the trip here: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass

Switzerland has an amazing public transport. Its extent and reliability cannot be underestimated.

People from cultures where driving is the way to go might not realise how good the public transport option is.

I would recommend public transport for what you’ve got planned. There’s no driving strain when you take the train.

And you may discover it to be cheaper than a one way rental.

    Enjoy your travels!
