If you want, you can get out at the small mid-station of Winteregg, where you'll find a restaurant and terrace with panoramic views.

How to travel

  1. Travel to Lauterbrunnen as explained here.
  2. As you come out of the rail station, cross the street to the valley station of the cable car to Grütschalp. There are clear signs showing the way from the train station to the cable car station. It's so close that you can't miss it.
  3. Board the cable car to Grütschalp.
  4. At Grütschalp, board the train that heads south to Mürren.
  5. Get out at the railway station of Mürren (called "Mürren BLM"), which is on the northern side of the village.

  2. Turn immediately right as you come out of the Lauterbrunnen station. This is where the buses depart. Take the bus to 'Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn'. The bus ride takes about 12 minutes.
  3. Get out at Stechelberg and enter the valley station of the cableway to Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Schilthorn.
  4. Make the cableway ride to Gimmelwald, and switch to yet another cable car to Mürren there. You'll end up at the cableway station at the southern end of the village, called "Mürren (Schilthornbahn)".

How to reach Mürren by car and where to park

Mürren is car-free. There’s no parking option in the village, and there’s no road to Mürren either.

This is why you have to park your car in Lauterbrunnen or in Stechelberg. From there, continue by public transport explained above. Details about parking:

  • A spot in the covered parking garage in Lauterbrunnen costs approximately CHF 20 for a single day. The daily rate is lower for multiple-day parking. It’s best to book in advance. Without reservations, a parking spot is not guaranteed.
  • Parking costs are about CHF 8 for a day at the Stechelberg parking. This is an outdoor parking lot.

Once you’ve arrived in Mürren

You’ll either arrive by cable car in the southern end of Mürren, or by train in the northern end. There are no cars or buses in the village, so you’ll have to walk. The village is small though. Between both stations, it’s a pleasant 15-minute stroll along the scenic main street of Mürren.

If you need to reach accommodation in Mürren and if you’re carrying lots of luggage, contact your hotel in advance. In many cases, the staff can assist you.

How to continue your journey to Schilthorn

The mountain of Schilthorn above Mürren is absolutely worth a visit. You’ll need to board the cable car from the cable car station ‘Mürren (Schilthornbahn)’ in the southern part of Mürren. This gets you to mid-station Birg, and then to Schilthorn.

If you arrive in Mürren from Stechelberg and Gimmelwald, you can immediately switch to the cable car to Birg and Schilthorn. If you entered the village by train from Grütschalp, you’ll first have to walk to the cable car station in about 15 minutes.

Find many more details about the journey to Schilthorn here.

Which route is best?

Make a round trip if you can

Both routes are extremely scenic. If you visit Mürren and/or the Schilthorn, we recommend going up one way and down the other way. This way you’ll have a varied round trip and you don’t have to choose.

The scenery on both routes

We think it’s hard to determine which ride to Mürren is prettier. They’re both wonderful in their own way.

  • During the train trip between Grütschalp and Mürren, you’ll have views over the valley and the mountain tops at the southern end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The famous trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau can be seen too. You can best sit on the left side of the train for the best views.
  • The cable car ascent from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald is spectacular. It’s a steep ride along the high rock walls that rise up from the valley. You’ll look down on these slopes and several of the waterfalls for which the Lauterbrunnen Valley is so famous.

Traveling time

The quickest way to reach Mürren is via Grütschalp. The bus and cable car ride via Stechelberg is about 10 minutes longer.

Fear of height

If you’re not fond of steep cliffs and cableway rides, we recommend traveling via Grütschalp. This journey too involves a cableway ride, but it’s shorter and less steep than the one from Stechelberg.

How to combine a trip to Mürren with easy hikes

There are easy and very scenic hiking trails down in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and along the ridge parallel to the train from Grütschalp to Mürren. So you can do part of the trip to Mürren on foot:

The best direction would be to walk from north to south: from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg in the valley, or from Grütschalp to Mürren up on the slopes. This way you’ll face the imposing mountains at the southern end of the valley. But if the other direction happens to fit your plans better, that’s no problem. The walks will still be very pleasant and scenic.
