Free local transport

Many hotels in St. Moritz offer the “Mountain railways inclusive” option to their guests in spring and summer: free trips by regional cable cars and mountain railways. From late October to early May, you can get a discounted ski pass at most hotels: the “Sleep + Ski” formula.

We still recommend checking if one of the rail passes provides better discounts for your plans. Find further details in our St. Moritz guide.

How to reach your hotel in St. Moritz

The rail station of St. Moritz is in the valley, at the same level as the lake. The town center is on the hills above the train station. That’s where most hotels can be found too. There are long escalators connecting the train station level to the town center.

If you have too much luggage to comfortably get up, you can use regular buses. A bus ride from the train station to the town center takes 6 to 8 minutes. You can also check if your hotel offers a pick-up service.

Near the station and on the lake: Hotel Waldhaus

The comfortable Hotel Waldhaus deserves our special recommendation. Its location is convenient: you’ll get there on foot within minutes from the rail station, and you don’t have to climb the slopes to the town center. Moreover, it’s located right on the lake and has wide views.

Where to find cheaper alternatives

The average hotel in St. Moritz is a bit pricey, although there are perfect mid-range options in the town center too.

Somewhat cheaper hotels can be found in St. Moritz-Bad, a district in the valley on the lake. It can be reached by bus from the town center, or on foot in about 20 minutes. An example in this district is the Youth Hostel.

As for the nearby villages:

  • Celerina, Samedan, and Pontresina are close to St. Moritz. They’re mid-sized villages with all the shops and facilities you need as a tourist.
  • Bever, La-Punt Chamues-ch, and Zuoz a bit further east in the valley are wonderful base towns. We stayed in each of them and can recommend them for their scenic location, lovely views, authentic buildings, and easy train connections to St. Moritz.
  • Sils, Surlej, and Maloja are pretty villages on the lakes west of St. Moritz. There’s no train station here, but there are frequent buses to and from St. Moritz. These towns’ lakeside locations are absolutely beautiful.

Where to find the luxurious resorts

St. Moritz is famous for its very exquisite hotels. These are the main 5-star ones:

  • The Kulm Hotel is located in the town center.
  • Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is located quite close to the lake and the train station.
  • Suvretta House is a bit away from the town center and higher up on the slopes.
  • The Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski can be found south of the town and the lake.

Each of these hotels provides free transfers to the station, so you don’t have to worry about your luggage.

In addition, there are several very comfortable 3- and 4-star hotels in the town center.
