    Dear All,

This is my first post on this wonderful forum. We are a family of 4 with 2 kids aged (10 and 6). We are planning our visit from 5 April 2019 for a week. We are totally clueless about what to add in our to do list. We would like to explore the most scenic places. Please help us in choosing best cities to visit during month of April. Will there be any ski resort available at that particular time? Which will be the best scenic train route at that time? what about chocolate train? . Please advice.

Hi Manupatil and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Great that you are planning to visit beautiful Switzerland.

I would encourage you to have a good read of the following section on our website, which is very comprehensive (and in particular the “scenic trips”): http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities

What is special about Switzerland is the mountain scenery as opposed to the cities – which we all try to get away from at the weekend 😀 So unless you really want to see something in a city (museum, monument or the like), the best place to be would be in the mountains.

In terms of skiing, I would not recommend it, as all resorts tend to close in April, and the snow is not very good anymore even if they are open! If you really want to do something snow related, then I would encourage you to go up high (keeping in mind some strategies to avoid altitude sickness if you’re not used to it e.g. if you live at sea level), and maybe go sledging, snowshoeing or doing a hike on a glacier (Aletsch glacier for example has a great and informative hike that shows insects trapped in the ice): http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/snow.

For the panoramic trains including the chocolate train, have a look at: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/scenictrips/t rain

For weather information, you can look at: http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather

Hope this helps gets you started! Once you have a more detailed itinerary in mind, you can come back to us with questions or clarifications.

    Maria.

    Hi All,

I have checked the links provided by Maria. Its so much of information there. Its very difficult for me to finalize on things as we have only 7 days and too many places to see. Can anyone list out best places to visit in April. If anyone has visited around the same time please list out the must visit scenic locations.

    Thanks n advance.

    Hi Manupatil,

The best places to visit in Switzerland are different for everyone – it really depends on what you and your family want to do.

April is shoulder season and the smaller villages in the mountains are getting quite quiet at that time (ski season is just ending in the first week or two of April. So if skiing is a priority I’d head to the mountains as soon as you arrive in the country.

For what to expect for weather and activities in Switzerland at that time of year look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/be sttimetovisit

If you want to focus on skiing and visiting the mountains then I would look at the Jungfrau region as a good start: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion – any of the towns listed here are good options, and from there you can try out skiing. I’d look at Grindelwald as having good facilities and skiing options nearby: http://www.myswissalps.com/gr indelwald

For a town experience without thinking about skiing, I would look at Lucerne, Montreux or Lugano, as they are should have reasonable spring weather (fingers crossed) especially Lugano.

Hopefully that helps get your trip planning in the right direction!

    Hi Manupatil,

Ok, let’s see what we can do with your ideas.

First do you have any idea how you will be travelling into Switzerland?! This can make some difference in the routing you might choose. Use this link for help: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr avel/toswitzerland

The villages of Interlaken, Grindelwald and Murren are all in the Jungfrau region and would thus make sense keeping them together, with Interlaken as a base, maybe?! They are all close to the city of Bern, our capital, which you could include in a day trip, too.
    Check these links:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/in terlaken
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion
    http://www.myswissalps.com/be rn

You can easily spend a few days in the Jungfrau Region, this depends on what you’d like to see and do.

Engelberg and Lucerne are close and can easily be combined, Lucerne offers itself as another nice base city to spend some time. Have a look at these links:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne
http://www.myswissalps.com/ti tlis (the mountain by Engelberg)
    http://www.myswissalps.com/la kelucerne

Montreux, Lugano, Basel and Zurich are all in fairly wide-spread corners of the country and would include quite some travelling. So maybe limit your choices on these.
Montreux is close should you travel via Geneva airport and Zurich has an airport too, so these places could be covered, depending on your arrival/departure.

To get a general idea of travelling times to each of your planned destinations use this link: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

    Happy planning.

    Best,

    Thank You Steph,

You guys are amazing, I am getting a better picture by every answer from your side.

We will be travelling from Dubai to zurich and so looking for places with more natural beauty. is chocolate train journey available in month of April? If not where can I visit chocolate and cheese factory? I think kids will enjoy it.

How much time do you think we need to explore Interlaken, Grindelwald , Murren and Bern? What do you think about Grindelwald as base? Please advice.

    Thank You.

    Hello Manupatil,

Unfortunately the Chocolate Train does NOT operate in the month of April, it starts in May.

Check out the culinary tours here for further inspiration: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/culinarytours

You can easily spend a whole week in the Jungfrau Region, depending on the activities you want to do and what you want to see. So it’s a little hard to generalise. I would go with about a day per destination, as you might want to do some hiking, takes cable cars to viewpoints, do a city tour in Bern, etc. But it’s up to you of course.

And sure, Grindelwald works as a base too, no doubt:

    Enjoy planning.

    Best,
    Steph
