How to reach Zermatt from Visp-Täsch and Zermatt floods situation?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Zermatt from Bern on July 4 and needs info on bus options from Visp to Tasch, plus whether they'll need another train to reach Zermatt. They also want to know if Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are open after recent flooding.

Key takeaways:
  • Check for bus schedules at Visp station, as there will be clear signage directing you to replacement buses to Tasch.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass offers flexibility; if Zermatt is still affected by floods, consider other destinations.
  • Trains run every 20 minutes between Tasch and Zermatt, so you won't have to wait long.
  • Use the Swiss timetable online to stay updated on train and bus schedules.

We are planning to visit Zermatt from Bern on July 4 and would like to know where we could take a bus when we get off from Visp train station to Visp bus shuttle to Tasch? Do we need to take another train from Tasch to Zermatt? How do I find the bus time table and train time table from Tasch to Zermatt?

Does anyone know if Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise has opened since the flooding?

    Thank you for your help

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) then I would not take a decision until July 3rd.  If Zermatt ( https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zermatt/) is still badly affected by the floods, forget Zermatt and go somewhere else.  That is one the (many) merits of the Swiss Travel Pass.  If weather and/or transport disruption and/or anything else makes going to destination X undesirable, you go somewhere else!  EG a few years ago the threat of Avalanches put the line from Brig to Andermatt out of action.  A planned round trip Zurich-Brig-Chur-Zurich was therefore impossible.  I went somewhere else – I cannot now remember where!
However, if the railway to Tasch has not been fixed by July 4, but Zermatt village is OK and you are keen to visit there, GO!  There will no doubt be a fleet of buses on rail replacement, and there were will be big signs at Visp telling you where to go.   The buses to Tasch are likely to take about the same time as the train (cog-wheel railways are slow!).  Tasch-Zermatt, trains every 20 minutes.

    Hi Warits126,

Per Roger Sextxon’s helpful reply.  If you have the flexibility to travel elsewhere that could be the better option.  According to the Zermatt website (https://www.zermatt.ch/en/Media/Liveticker-Zermatt-Matterhorn/Current-situation-Zermatt-Matterhorn ) as of 24th June, Zermatt has been accessible.

If replacement buses are in force, rest assured, it will be impeccably organised and there will be appropriate signs available to direct you accordingly from the train station. If anything it should be directly in front of the rail station.

You can use the Swiss timetable to research your journey – this will always be up to date.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

‘If replacement buses are in force, rest assured, it will be impeccably organised’.  I can support that from personal experience.  I used to base myself in Bern. On one trip to Zermatt from Bern, part of the journey up the valley was by replacement bus.  Wow! The organisation was superb.

    Hi Warits126,

There are rail replacement buses in place to take passengers from Visp to Täsch and vice versa. At Visp station, there are signage on-site to direct you to the replacement bus.

Between Zermatt and Täsch, a shuttle train is in operation every 20 mins. This is the situation until the train line between Visp and Täsch is reopened again.

    Regards,

    Anna

We just returned home from Switzerland. We travelled to Zermatt and spent June 26/27 and left on the 28th. We followed normal train schedules and as previous people mentioned, there are busses to transport from Visp to Tasch and vice versa. For us this was a flawless system as when we arrived in Visp by train, the busses were waiting, passengers boarded and we left. The train at Tasch was waiting and we boarded and were trained to Zermatt. It was zero inconvenience for us. We used the SBB app for everything. It is a great planning tool as well as we booked all excursions from here. This included, Pilatus Klum, Mt Rigi, Beatus caves, Wengen to Mannlichen, Zermatt to Sunnegga, Gornergrat. I truly admire the Swiss transportation systems as we never had one negative experience in our 10-day trip. We had the 15-day Swiss travel Pass.

As for Gornergrat, it was closed for a few days when we were there but was back in the service the morning of the 28th. I rode it up to get some great shots of the Matterhorn as well as a quick hike before we departed Zermatt. It was great!

    Hope this helps
