Two years ago my wife & I took a little side trip to the Black Forest while visiting Switzerland, and discovered a couple of delightful beer gardens with large trees, plentiful tables, very casual atmosphere, simple but good food, and of course good draft beer. Although we’ve been to Switzerland multiple times, and had good beers in many great places, I don’t recall finding any beer gardens like we encountered in Germany. Perhaps we just haven’t been to the right area or specific town.

So, do any of you have a favorite beer garden in Switzerland? Or if not a beer garden per se, what is your favorite place to have a cold beer or two?

    Hi CabinJon,

Beer garden is more of a German thing. In Switzerland, you can find beer garden-style settings but the vibe is certainly different. In Zurich (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/), I can think of one – the Frau Gerold’s Garten near Hardbrucke station. In Lucerne (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lucerne/), you might want to check out the Rathaus Brauerei – it’s a traditional brewery!

    Hey CabinJon,

You may also want to consider the Altes Tramdepot in Bern: https://altestramdepot.ch. Right next to the Bärenpark (Bear Park) and easy to reach on foot or by tram from the train station.

At Zurich HB (central station), there is Brasserie Federal with a large selection of Swiss beers: https://www.brasserie-federal.ch.

    Anna & Arno,

Thank you for your responses. My wife & I have been to Switzerland 6 times and have been to 3 of the 4 restaurants you mentioned. The Rathaus in Lucerne several times – good food and beer, and we’ve enjoyed having a beer outside along the river too. The Brasserie Federal in the Zurich HB was an accidental discovery a couple years ago and is a delightful place to enjoy a cold beer (or two). A good beer selection and wonderful interior design & architecture, completely unexpected for a restaurant in a train station. We stumbled into the Altes Tramdepot two years ago during a day trip and walking exploration in Bern. Also delightful, and the rosti wasn’t bad either.

This year we will definitely try the Frau Gerold’s Garten near Hardbrucke station in Lucerne since we spend several days in Lucerne. I understand that beer gardens aren’t a Swiss thing and we’ve found plenty of wonderful places to have a cold beer and something to eat throughout Switzerland. I do my best to identify those places in my trip reports so others can enjoy them.

Feel free to add other rehydration favorites, beer garden style or not.

We may skip the Frau Gerold’s Garten near Hardbrucke station since I mistakenly thought it was in Lucerne instead of Zurich. But it sounds like an interesting place.
