Explore Switzerland from Buchs SG (business trip)

Short summary – read this first

Sunil is coming to Zurich with his family for a business trip from August 30 to September 14, looking to explore the Alps before moving to Buchs, SG. He specifically wants advice on mountain destinations and activities for the days leading up to September 2. He is also curious about weekend options after work during their stay in Buchs.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in Lucerne or Engelberg as a base for your family trip to explore nearby mountains like Mt. Titlis and Interlaken.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can be very useful for convenient travel between cities and attractions, especially if you'll be using trains frequently.
  • Ensure to bring a foldable stroller for easier access on trains and trams, as it can make traveling with young kids much more manageable.

    Hello all,

I am coming to siwss on business trip and taking my family along. So we are total 4 (2 adults, 2 kids 5yrs, 2yrs) coming to zurich on Aug 30 morning. Will stay there till Sep 14. but free time till Sep 2nd. During this free time we want to explore Alps/Mountains with snow. From Sep 3rd we will be staying in buchs, SG. That means we have to come to Buchs on Sep2nd. Could you advise which places near by to explore mountains, europe top, natural scene etc.. ?

And also is anything possible to go out on weekdays after work?

    Thanks

    Sunil

Hi Suni and welcome to MySwissAlps!

So do you have plans on where you are staying from Aug.30 to Sept 2? Or are you in Buchs SG then too?

Do you want to travel and stay a few days before Buchs SG somewhere else in Switzerland? Perhaps Lucerne or the Jungfrau Region appeal to you?

From Buchs, the nearby, popular destinations would be St. Gallen, Säntis (mountain) as well as Davos (https://www.myswissalp s.com/davos) and Chur. Another option would be the EbenAlp near Appenzell.

From Chur you could do the Bernina Express panoramic train to Tirano (4 hours one-way though from Chur) https://www.myswissalp s.com/berninaexpress

Cable cars to most mountains shut down around 6pm so going to one after work usually won’t work, assuming work ends around 6? It doesn’t leave you much time to go anywhere from Buchs SG…maybe the Walensee? but lakes aren’t as fun at night more often than not!

    Hello Lucas,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

    My Plan is like this

Landing on 31st Aug @ Zurich

Planning to make Lucerne or Engleberg as base stations . Need your suggestion on where to stay hotels and city?

As of now my plan is like this

On Aug 31st: zurich airport -> Lucerne hotel -> engleberg – Mt. Titls

    Sep 1st: Lucerne to Interlaken

    Sep 2nd: Around Lucerne

As we are travelling with 2yr baby can we take stroller along with? Is it easily accessible in trains and on the roads?

    Thanks

    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,

Ok, I think Lucerne is a good base for your days before Buchs. We have a list of recommended hotels in Lucerne here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/lucerne/hotels

The stroller will be ok on trains and trams etc. I’d recommend using one that can be folded up though – much nicer for everyone.:)
