Swiss Travel Pass or Berner Oberland Pass for our 4 day trip?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler plans to land in Zurich at 7:20 PM and wonders if they will make their 11:30 PM train to Wengen after going through passport control and collecting luggage. They will be in Wengen for 4 days and plan to visit Grindelwald and Lucerne, asking for recommendations on which rail pass to choose.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect around 1 hour 50 minutes for a car ride from Zurich airport to Lauterbrunnen, but allow for potential delays at the airport.
  • Consider the Swiss Travel Pass for traveling further or a regional pass like the Berner Oberland Pass if sticking to nearby attractions.
  • Check for updated travel times and potential delays on your arrival day for better planning.

Traveling to Wengen in a few weeks.  First, we land in Zurich at 7:20pm.  After collecting luggage and going through passport check, how long will it take to get to Lauterbrunnen to catch an 11:30pm train to Wengen? We have a car service picking us up at the Zurich airport.  Will we make our train in Lauterbrunnen to Wengen????

Secondly, While in Wengen, we plan to visit Grindewald, Lucerne and do a few activities as well.  Which pass would any of you recommend? We’ll be there for 4 days total.

    Thanks!

Where are you flying in from?  Are you flying from outside the Schengen Zone?  If you do not know what I mean by ‘Schengen Zone’, then you are coming from outside it.

My experience in flying from Britain (outside the Schengen Zone) is that flights into Zurich are often a bit late.  There are often long queues (20-30 minutes) at passport control.  (That is a new problem, but I have experienced it on all three of my visits to Zurich post-covid).

My reaction is that, especially if you are coming from outside Schengen, there is a real risk of of getting struck in Lauterbrunnen.

    Hi SDFAM,

    Very welcome to MySwissAlps.

    Thanks for sharing your plans.

If I have understood you correctly, a car journey from Zurich airport to Lauterbrunnen would take approximately 1 hour 50.

You could arrive in Lauterbrunnen by 11:30pm, per Roger, this is on the proviso, you experience no airport arrival delays or any delays at passport control or luggage delays either.  Not forgetting any traffic delays too.

Based on your plans, if you are in the area for a few days and intend to use the public transportation a lot, then a regional pass like the Berner Oberland Pass would make sense.  If traveling further afar, then the Swiss Travel Pass would be a wiser investment.  More on these rail passes in the below links.

Probably best to carry out some maths to be sure of the best rail pass.  We have a handy guide to assist you with this. There is also a downloadable spreadsheet you can use.  Thereon the best rail pass is displayed based on your daily plans.  Here’s the link:

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
