Hi, myself and my partner have a short visit to Switzerland booked for mid-January 2023. We intend to take a day trip from Zurich to Jungfraujoch by train.

The SBB booking website indicates the train journey will be approx. CHF440 (using half fare card) for two adults, my question is, does booking via SBB include the Eiger Express cable car component of the total journey?

Also, the total journey appears to take just over 3 or 4 hours one way, depending on which train is booked – journey time aside, is there an advantage on taking either train?

    Thanks.

    Hi TechComm,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The train ride to Jungfraujoch is a popular excursion and can be done as a day trip from Zurich. A single journey from Zurich to Jungfraujoch takes roughly 4 hours so might be a good idea to take the earliest train out.

There are 3 ways to travel to Jungfraujoch as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere. If you take the Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald Terminal, the journey to Jungfraujoch is shortened by around 45 minutes. Most travellers combine the cable car with the cogwheel train ride as a round trip. The price of the ticket includes all modes of transport. You can find information on ticket prices to Jungfraujoch here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have further questions.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi TechComm,

Indeed, most tickets listed at https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets cover all ways to travel between Interlaken and Jungfraujoch, so you can plan your own round trip. If you prefer to buy through the SBB, I recommend their official tourist webshop Switzerland Travel Centre: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/en/product/excursionJungfraujoch. While purchasing, you can check the box “Swiss Half Fare Card” under “Discount for holders of”, so you’ll automatically get the right discounted price.

You’ll also need 50% discounted return tickets Zurich-Interlaken. Those would cost about CHF 70. If you plan well in advance, you should be able to get hold of a 50% discounted Saver Day Pass that’s much cheaper than CHF 70. Please see https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass for explanation about this pass and https://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price for purchase options.

More information about using the Swiss Half Fare Card is available at https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/howtouse.
