    Hello,

I am considering doing a 10 day combo of Appenzell hut to hut thru hike with a trip to Bern-Oberland for day hikes. I started a rough itinerary and would love your feedback:

    day 1 (saturday)

    arrive in Zurich 11:30am

    Train to Appenzell

    Overnight in Appenzell

    day 2 (Sunday)

    Hike 6 miles to Falensee/Bollenwees

    overnight BerghausBollenwees

    day 3 (Monday)

Hike to Berghaus Meglisalp via Zwinglipass & Rotsteinpass

    overnight Berghaus Meglisalp

    day 4 (Tuesday)

Hike Lisengrat to Santis to Berghaus Schaefer

    Overnight Berghaus Schafer

    day 5 (Wednesday)

Hike out early, lunch at Berghaus Aescher

We can take cable car if we are short on time

    Afternoon train to Wengen

(is this possible? I haven’t checked train schedules)

    Overnight in Wengen

    day 6 (Thursday)

day hikes out of Wengen TBD

    Overnight in Wengen

    day 7 (Friday)

day hikes out of Wengen TBD

    Overnight in Wengen

    day 8 (saturday)

day hikes out of Wengen TBD

    Overnight in Wengen

    day 9 (Sunday)

    train back to Zurich

    overnight zurich

    day 10 (Monday)

    fly home

I could split up the 4 nights into 2 nights Wengen and 2 nights in another town but I am just not sure which one. Also open to suggestions for day hikes around Wengen/Grimewald area. We like to stay away from the crowds as much as possible, unless its something we absolutely shouldn’t miss.

Lastly, I would love a beautiful swimming destination like Valle Verzasca or Caumasee, but they don’t really fit into this trip (unless someone has a recommendation). Anywhere else we could go and will it be warmish enough? I don’t mind cold water. We are travelling first week of September.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Jill

Last train of the day from Wasserauen to Wengen is 18.48 (arrive Wengen 23.41). The same schedule works every hour – ie working backwards there would be a 17.48 and a 16.48 etc from Wasserauen

However Aescher to Wasserauen will take some time

Thanks that is very helpful. We can always take the cable car down if we do not have time to hike down, correct? I am always faster hiking down than up. We will however need to pick some luggage up in Appenzell.

Aescher to Wasserauen downhill hike is very steep and rocky – it took me much longer to do than anticipated.

I haven’t figured out the trains yet. Is it necessary to make reservations or can we just hop on?
