My wife and I are planning a 10 day trip starting in Geneva to Zermatt to Grindelwald to Lucerne to Lugano. I would like to have a car from Geneva to Lucerne than take the Gotthard Panorama Express to Lugano.

I plan on numerous cable car, train rides (like from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch),a few museums etc..

I am having a lot of difficulty figuring out the best rail pass especially since it is either 8 or 15 days for the Swiss Rail pass and overall I will mainly be traveling by car.

Do I just get the Half pass? do I get the 8 day and add on something.

Any advice would be appreciated as this is a headache in the making!

Hello poncedeleon and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

If you are mainly driving then I would say the Swiss Half Fare Card is you best bet.

To be sure you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to all the available passes.

Having said that I wonder if you realise how fantastic the Swiss public transport is? Perhaps you might find http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain illuminating.

    Hello Poncedelon,

To add to car travel normally the Swiss Half Fare Card is the most reasonable, see below for details:

However, as mentioned by Rockoyster, one can easily plan the whole journey by public transport in Switzerland, as services are very good and traveling very comfortable. See:

Should you decide to travel only by train the Swiss Travel Pass would be recommendable, offering lots of comfort and including most (not all) journeys. See below link for more detailed information:

If you choose the option to travel by car and use the Swiss Half Fare Card you could also look into the Tell Pass for the time in Lucerne, depending on how much time you’ll spend there.
