Outline of trip. Swiss Travel Pass 8 day Flex 1st class. Worth every cent. No hassle, just get on the train , boat, or bus. Also good for museums . We only reserved seats on the Panoramic trains and had no problem walking on to any other train or boat.

Geneva 1 night. Holiday Inn Express .Very clean no restaurant but reasonable breakfast.

Chur 1 night. ABC Swiss Quality Hotel. Good breakfast .No restaurant but Othello round the corner was excellent. Hotel 2 minutes from station.

Bernina Express to Tirano then standard train to Pontresina. Fabulous journey but take your own lunch.

Pontresina 3 nights Schweitzerhof Hotel DB&B good value also free transport from and to station.

Be aware that St Moritz is almost shut in May and first 3 weeks in June. Went back on a section of Bernina Express route to see the glaciers Great weather and wonderful scenery.

Glacier Express to Andermatt. Good but nowhere near as good as Bernina., then to Lucerne via scenic route. A long day but well worth it especially the trip from Andermatt down the gorge.

Lucerne 4nights Continental Park Hotel. Good place to stay and close to station

Went up Rigi ,boat trip to Fluelen. and back by train, also Swiss Transport Museum and Glacier Museum , all well worth doing Plenty of restaurants at, for Switzerland, reasonable prices. Try the Rathaus Brewery.

To Montreux via Interlaken Zweisimmen and VIP seats on Golden Pass train to Montreux. Great views from front of train.

Montreux 3 nights Eurotel. Visited Rochers de Naye, Chillon Castle and a couple of boat rides and Nestle and Chaplin museums in Vevey, finally an afternoon train to Geneva Airport. .

12 busy days but quite doable and we are both 78.

Many, many thanks to all at My Swiss Alps for your help and a brilliant forum and web operation.

    .Best wishes. John Elsy.

I did some of that 2 years ago and heading over to do some more of your trip in September. Planning on doing the Glacier Express, Bernina Express (with Bus to Lugano) and Gotthard Panorama Express (with boat) to Lucerne. Did Golden Pass 2 years ago in winter had middle seat on front row with only 2 other people on the second row.

Thanks for this great trip report, John! You certainly covered a lot of ground, and seem to have had a wonderful time.

Your tip about St Moritz in May and June is a good one. Most mountain transport in the Upper Engadin closes down after the ski season (first or second week of April), and doesn’t start up again until the last week or two of June when the hiking season gets underway. The Diavolezza cable car is the only one operating at that time of year.

    >> We did Diaviola using the local travel pass … wonderful views and superb weather

I agree, the views at the Diavolezza are wonderful! I had a lovely day for my visit there as well, and although it was quite calm, some wispy clouds rolled in rather fast and then dispersed just as quickly – quite eerie!
