Thank you so much as this site was the basis of my planning! I enjoyed reading the trip reports, suggestions, etc., so I have kept detailed notes in the case it might help others with their planning! Most of this was completed on my phone through Google Docs on trains during transit, so please forgive spelling, etc.

Cost Break Down– From my records, our trip cost $7,400 USD (about 7,200 chf), not including airfare. With airfare, we spent about $8,800 USD. We stayed at 3-4 star hotels(about 230 chf nt) and had a mix of nice meals and quick bakery/coop meals. For planning reasons, we estimated about 80 chf pp per day. This was a very accurate estimate. Some days we didn’t spend nearly this much, but other days we splurged with a bottle of wine, or stopped for chocolate. I strongly encourage to stock up on hotel breakfast buffet with a light coop lunch sandwich/fruit, and a nice dinner. An average day was about 30 chf for hotel breakfast, 30 chf coop lunch, and 100 chf dinner. We paid about 950 chf for the 2 week Swiss Travel Pass (Highly recommend so you don’t have to worry about buying separate tickets) and we budgeted 500 chf in tourism items, 250 chf for misc expenses that came up (like wash n fold laundry halfway through our trip), and 300 chf for mountain travel not included is Swiss Travel Pass. Our original budget was $9,400 and we came in about $600 under budget by saving on meals here/there, not doing many extra mountain travels (like top of Europe-Jungfraujoch), etc. This is a bucket list trip for us, and this trip was a mix of conscious budget and indulgent splurging. I feel like this is a very good idea of a typical travel cost.

A note on Wengen- our hotel was lower the train station. Didn’t have much of a view of snow capped Mts. We only saw a nice view from the train station. We loved the view from Murren. We booked Wengen as many said the views were “heaven on earth”, that’s how I felt about Murren. I was a little let down on the views from Wengen (at least our hotel)- although still beautiful. I liked Wengen a lot, but the view that we were expecting of the snow covered mountains right in front of you was more in Murren. I would stay in Wengen again, but thought I’d mention this as my initial reaction at the view as like “this is not what I was picturing”, and when I went to Murren I said, “this is what I thought the view would be like!”

Hi Autumnz and thanks for the detailed trip report!

Great to hear your trip went smoothly and you had such a good time.
Wengen does offer some nice views but it is all dependent on your hotel location I think! What hotel did you stay in at Wengen?

Glad you made your return flight though, arriving 90 minutes before a flight is a touch tight for me on international flights! Definitely leaves no time to shop!

Hope you have a chance to come back someday!

We stayed at hotel baeren. The pictures on TripAdvisor had great views but from balcony rooms-we didn’t have a balcony room. Also, dining was on the lowest level and the angle of the building meant turning our heads to “strain to see the view”. I would guess hotels higher up would be better!

And, I thought I read 90 min to 2 hrs would be plenty of time before airport, but i think this time is to gates only, add shopping time to this! 🙂

Autumn, very detailed trip report and helpful budgeting information. We were planning to arrive at least 2 hours in Zurich before our flight. We have a 10:10 am flight and will be staying in Old Town. May have to get our hotel breakfast to go!

I wanted to ask how you enjoyed the mineral spa by Mt. Rigi? Did you just bring your own towel and stay for an hour or so? Also, if you had to pick one day (between day 7,8,9) which did you enjoy most? We have 3 nights in Grindelwald and were thinking of doing one of these things. Was there a big line for the Shilthorn? Did you have a good map of the Bernese area or just use your phone? How was your weather during your stay? Thanks again!

We knew ahead of time we wanted to do the mineral spa, so we brought our suits and towels in our backpack. We like to soak, and I had injured my foot right before our trip so I knew I wanted to soak it. It is a pool with spa jets indoor and outdoor. No true jacuzzi as it is the same as pool temp, but water was very warm to swim and enjoy. It is definitely a soak and enjoy rather than swim. We stayed in the main area, except to use steam room for a bit. The main floor is the pool and the water is very warm and the view is nice. It isn’t a “not to be missed”, but we always enjoy a soak and we loved it!

Looking at lake thun/castle, Bern, or Brienz with Aare gorge…..Lake brienz and aare gorge hands down. Lake Brienz Water is so Turquoise And Beautiful. Aare Gorge Was Awesome! Geissbach Falls Only If You Have Time. My Keyboard Is Acting Up! Sorry About Caps Letters!

We Used Phone Only And Were Fine. Navigating Cities Was Hard, That’s Why We Liked Free Walk Tours…No Map, Just Follow The Guide.

Schilthorn Had A Few Longer Lines And As A Tourist Site, Busy…But Nothing That Seemed Too Long Or Annoying. We Loved and prefer Titlis, But Schilthorn Had Nice Views Also.

Thanks for your tips Autumn. I will definitely plan to take the boat ride to Lake Brienz (free with our STP). We were planning on going to Titlis or Pilatus while in Lucerne (and maybe Rigi). Only there for 2 nights. Will look into the free walking tours but my husband and son like to wander on their own!

Thank you for taking the trouble to write such a detailed report autumnz – the budget tips in particular are spot on – knowing in advance roughly what to expect things to cost is a big help. We do self-catering for most of our Swiss trip and as eating out in the evenings can be very expensive so we usually go for a light cooked lunch option and have evening meals back in apartment – excellent choices of salad ingredients and meat or cheese in supermarkets or even better street markets keep overall costs down.

It sounds like you had an amazing holiday – lots of variety and sensibly not too rushed!

    Maggie
