Hi, We are looking for a 3 night rail tour start from Zurich – Zermatt – St. Moritz – Lugano. This tour is listed on this website and it uses Glacier and Bernina Express, and this is a independent tour at $772 per person. Any of us knows if we need to change trains often and at where to get between cities. They list 1 night in Zermatt, 1 night in St. Moritz, and one night in Lugano. This is my first time visiting Swiss Alps and really need help. Thank you. Thy

    Hello Heart Voyage,

I’m not quite sure what tour package you are referring to. Maybe send a link.

You probably change trains once in between Zurich and Zermatt depending on the route followed. The Glacier Express will take you to Chur and the Bernina Express will take you to Tirano where you will join a bus to Lugano. (Note I’m speculating here because I don’t know the precise package you have in mind).

Train travel around Switzerland is super easy so if you don’t want to be tied to a packaged solution you can easily map out your own itinerary.

If you want to do that then based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.

Hi Rockoyster, Below is the link of the tour and the tour info”. I am not sure if it is with alot of moving between places, we have time to enjoy each place.

Overview Ride on Switzerland’s most impressive alpine train routes during this 3-night trip with reservations on the Glacier and Bernina Express trains. With sweeping mountain views and tracks that travel across historical viaducts and around lakes, the train routes are loved for their scenery, but working out the journeys can be tricky if you are new to the area. This trip from Zermatt to Lugano makes it easy with a preplanned itinerary, overnight accommodation, and train tickets booked in advance.

** Rest overnight in prebooked hotels in Zermatt, St. Moritz, and Lugano ** See the Italian and Swiss alps on the Glacier and Bernina Express trains ** Admire views of Lake Lugano on the Bernina Express bus from Tirano

Thank you so much for your response.

If you have only 4 days then that is certainly one way to see a lot of countryside and travel on some major scenic trains. There is probably something like 15 – 16 hours of train/bus travel involved (guess) over 3 days. What will you do from Lugano?

    See http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress and http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress.

How many days do you have in Switzerland and what are your priorities of the types of things you would like to experience? Some people would be happy to fly in and out of Zurich and spend 4 days in the Alps near Interlaken.

My sister and I will fly in Zurich and have about 3.5 days (3 nights) before we head down to Genoa Italy to meet up with 2 friends. Our trip will in the first week of October. We don’t ski but we want to see a little bit of everything of Switzerland. You mentioned Interlaken and it looks wonderful. Is it a ski resort? Or it has other things to see. We are debating if we should stay in a hotel in Zurich and take day trip to Lucern for example and come back to Zurich at night. Or we should travel to the next city every day with bags and travel down south toward Lugano, Como, Milan.

I have looked some tours and they look great but most of them are self guided tours and the customer reviews say they could have done by themselves to have extra time at each stop. Is it very easy to travel around Switzerland? Thank you Rockoyster for all the suggestions.

Luzern is a lovely city an there is plenty to do there. I would recommend it as a base ahead of Zurich. It is easy to reach Milan and Genoa from there.

    See http://www.myswissalps.com/lucerne/activities.

Interlaken is not a ski resort but it is the gateway to the fabulous Jungfrau Region where you will find some great scenery. See http://www.myswissalps.com/interlaken/activities.

The tour you saw going from Zurich to Zermatt to St Moritz to Lugano can easily be done without the need for an organised tour.

It really depends how much train travel you want to do. My personal preference is for a single base and doing day trips rather than moving hotels constantly.

Given that you are continuing to Italy you should read http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

If you decide to go DIY instead of a package then based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.
