    Hi Lucas & team..

have been following your website for a while, ahead of our forthcoming trip to Switzerland from 6th to 11th September. We are family of 2 adults 2 kids (5 and 12). after long searches decided to base in lungern.. literally fell for its images.. Here is a tentative itinerary. kindly input your valuable comments regarding practicality..

Day 1 arrival zurich 0645 am.. keep luggage.. trip to Rhine falls and back.. check in Lungern between 16.00 to 19.00hrs

Day2. Mt Titlis and later Lucerne city, especially transport museum, bridges

Day 3 Jungfraujoch.. later explore interlaken if time permits

Day 4 St Beatus caves, lake Thun and Castles

    Day 5 Aare Gorge +/- Rhein bach falls, Ballenberg museum;

Day 6 early morning check out ..return flight from Zurich 11.30 hrs

    Days flexible depending on weather..

Plan to get STP for 8 days..

kindly give inputs; would have loved to visit either one of Rigi/Pilatus/Stanserhorn.. seems too much to squeeze in with this itinerary.. probably have to drop one from this if we have to visit one of those mountains?

    Thanks & Regards

    Fazil

Hi Fazil and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Looks good. I’m guessing you’ve seen and used the Swiss railways timetable to plan out all your trips from Lungern? (I agree a beautiful town). http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

I’d switch Titlis for Stanserhorn or Pilatus (Rigi if you prefer more hiking). Jungfraujoch is similar to Mt. Titlis and I’d guess a mountain you must see? So switch out Titlis for one of the mountains you were thinking about.

Be sure to buy the Swiss Travel Pass online: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price
It can be emailed to you and printed at home (saving you time at the airport train station and giving you a copy to print out again in case you lose your pass).

Hi.. thanks for the prompt response.

Have been working with SBB timetable for sometime.. very well knew that connectivity from Lungern is only every hour..so have to be punctual regarding starting the day!

    please clarify few things..

going to Rhine Falls.. luggage better kept in Zurich airport station/ main station?.. availability of lockers& their sizes etc..and of course ease of coming back to Lungern.

jungfraujoch.. round trip.. one way through Wengen and return by Grindelwald looks good…I understand that STP covers only till Wengen/ Grindelwald… whether round trip ticket covers both ways? Ticket can be bought from other stations (eg Lungern itself) or online?.. It’s impossible to get out in Wengen and take the ticket!! SBB mobile app doesn’t have an option for STP discounts.. I believe?

One more thought.. whether Brienzer. Rothorn can be done for a mountain and combined with Ballenberg in one day.. leaving out Aare gorge??

    Thanks & regards

    Hi Fazil,

    • The links to SBB website here will allow you to search for locker and other station information: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/luggage – I’d keep it at Zurich main station
    • The SBB app doesn’t have Swiss Travel Pass reductions no. It is geared to residents and not tourists. You can certainly buy tickets to Jungfraujoch at any station. The STP gets you 25% off the route (no matter which way you go) so yes round trip is 25% off. 🙂
    • Yes, certainly I think Brienzer Rothorn (http://www.myswissalps.com/br ienzerrothorn) and Ballenberg museum can be done in one day. The timetable will allow you to plan the trip and see how long it takes. I would guess around 2 hours on the mountain top is more than enough (on average).

    Hi Fazil –

A good friend used to stay in Lungern when he first was visiting Switzerland. He did use it as a base to travel around Switzerland. What I recall about his comments was:

1.- Have to get to to the station early ( as you noted).

2.- It is a noticeable walk uphill to the Bahnhof from the lake and the valley station (at Diesselbach) of the cableway that goes up to Turren. There used to be a chairlift connection down to Turren from Schoenbuel, at the end of a terrific ridge walk from the summit at Brienzer Rothorn. Then, I’d take the cableway from Turren down to Lungern. The chairlift no longer operates, so I have not done that walk for many years. When I did it, I’d get down to Lungern, and somehow I always had to run (almost) uphill to catch the hourly train. So, it is firmly in my memory that it is distinctly uphill to the station from the lowest parts of Lungern. And, that the trains run once per hour. ;-( Also, as you noted.

And, we have both returned to Lungern a few times since then, to eat at the Restaurant Bahnhöfli by the station.

    http://www.bahnhöfli.ch/

Very good. Lots of positive on-line reviews, too.

Useful while waiting for the next train, if you just miss one.

    Hi Slowpoke

    Thanks for the details…

It is going to be uphill since we are staying at the lakeside.

Does the cablecar still operate in Lungern?

<<“Does the cablecar still operate in Lungern?”>>

Check the timetable. The upper station is Turren. I recall that it has been running some years and not others. May be seasonal.

If you use the “Advanced Timetable” option, you can specify “mountain transport.”

Hi team.. few queries just prior to our visit

    • whats the daylight hours in Central Switzerland now? Sunrise& set?

    • Jungfraujoch train trip.. with STP no need of child ticket? We have an 11 yr old kid..( and a 5 yr one also who doesn’t require anyway)

    • Reservation from KS to Jungfraujoch.. if we are reserving seat, needs to get for kids also?Is it that if trains are crowded they won’t allow without reservation? In other words… you can’t travel standing??

    • Jungfrau marathon on sep 8.. SBB site says less services between KS and Jungfraujoch.. but timetable mentions the regular 1/2 hrly trains.. visit to Jungfraujoch is best avoided that day?? Too much crowd?

    Thanks &regards

    Hi Fazil,

    • The Swiss Travel Pass gives a 25% discount on the trip from Wengen or Grindelwald (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity) so you still need to buy a ticket yes.
    • Everyone who wants a seat must reserve one. Reservations are not mandatory though so you don’t have to worry about it, especially an average day in September
    • I’d avoid the Jungfraujoch trip on that day (I hate crowds) haha. But the timetable will give you the options so you can go if you want. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Might be a good idea to pack a lunch.

The trains up to Kleine Scheidegg will be crowded.

On busy days, the trains will run extra trips. Schedules will be hard to keep. With 3500 runners, there are thousands of spectators. “Trains” are more like trams; not a lot of capacity. The course ends at Kleine Scheidegg.

So, 3500 runners plus a lot of spectators have to get back down from Kleine Scheidegg.

I changed my schedule to avoid that day in Wengen.
