We intend to arrive in Zurich and travel directly to Lucerne where we have booked 5 nights accommodation. We understand there is a mobility pass to see the sights in Lucerne and we then intend to visit Mt. Titlus and most probably travel by train over 3 days to see other towns and mountains. Is it worth us getting the Swiss Travel Pass or should we pay as we go.

We are technically challenged and have not been able to work out what is best on the spread sheet. Can you assist. We are there in early August.

    Hi nickels,

If the spreadsheet defeats you then try this . . . .

An 8-day Swiss Travel Pass will cost you CHF50/day. If you travel everyday then the chances are you will spend more than that per day on train tickets or mountain or lake trips.

You can use the Swiss Train Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to work out the fares for any trip. When you go to buy a ticket the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare. With A Swiss Travel Pass it is free provided it is shown as free on the Area of Validity map ( PDF downloadable from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity). Some trips into the mountains only provide a discount as shown on the map.

Even if you don’t quite, or just, break even the Swiss Travel Pass is super convenient. By and large you don’t need to buy ANY tickets apart from the discounted trips mentioned above.
