    Hi,

My wife and I will be coming to Switzerland for 5 nights in early December 2019. Following Switzerland we are going to Venice and on to Florence and Rome.

    Places we really wanted to see are;

    • Jungfraujoch Area
    • Matterhorn
    • St Moritz and Bernina Express

    Our initial plan was:

Day 1: Fly into Zurich then train to Interlaken (possible stop in Lucerene on the way) – Interlaken overnight

Day 2: Jungfraujoch day trip including surrounding villages as time permits – Interlaken overnight

Day 3: Travel to Zermatt Early morning. Explore Zermatt and Matterhorn – Zermatt overnight

Day 4: Glacier Express to St Moritz

Day 5: Day Around St Moritz

Day 6: Bernina Express to Tirano and on to Venice

We have now noticed that the Glacier Express won’t be running until 14.12 which is the last day of our time in Switzerland so we need to make some changes to our plans and hope you could help.

    1. Is the above itinerary too full on or is it possible in 6 days? If you suggest to drop something what would be best to drop off?

    2. We thought of possibly dropping Zermatt and stay in Interlaken 3 days and use this as our base. If weather is good we can go 1 day trip to Jungfraujoch and 1 day trip to Zermatt. If weather is bad we could go to Bern or Lucerne.

    3. Leave our itinerary as it was initially and just take the less scenic train from Zermatt to St Moritz via Zurich instead?

    4. We would like to go on the Bernina Express. Would we be better off to commence our trip in St Moritz or end it in St Moritz also considering we are going to Venice next

    5. What are the thought of the overall itinerary? Should we cross of St Moritz and spend more time in Interlaken area and Zermatt only instead?

Note we have not booked the flight into Zurich yet so could also fly into Geneva. We will be coming from Frankfurt.

Hello Mason and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

    1. You itinerary is certainly doable. Full, but doable.

    2. Zermatt is pretty special.

    3. You can follow the route of the Glacier Express on regular trains. The scenery is exactly the same. That’s what I’d do.

    4. Not sure I understand the question but you could also consider an overnight in Chur and catch the Bernina Express from there the following day. The BEX from Chur to Tirano does not go to St Moritz. Pontresina would be its closest stop. Again you can follow the Bernina Express route in regular trains.

    5. Personal choice. You have to weigh up how long you want to spend travelling. You can alway go to Venice from Zermatt via Domodossola and Milan. The Glacier Express and the Bernina Express are both iconic train routes.

Note we have not booked the flight into Zurich yet so could also fly into Geneva. We will be coming from Frankfurt.

You are surely not considering flying from Frankfurt to Zurich. The ICE train will get you there much quicker. In fact you can train almost direct Frankfurt to Interlaken with just one stop. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/germany and http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy

Don’t delay on getting accommodation organised especially in Zermatt.

    Happy travels.

    Hi Mason,

Nice to hear you’re coming along.

I totally agree with Rockoyster, that your itinerary is do-able.

You need to decide for yourself how much travelling times and how long days you want to have during your stay.

To figure out travelling times for your itinerary use our timetable link. Make sure you read how it works, it’s an invaluable tool for planning:

Regarding your question 2, I think this is also a valid option, staying in Interlaken area and just doing day trips from there. The area offers lots to do:

For input about the scenic trains use these links:

    Hi Steph and rockoyster,

thank you for your responses. Good to hear that you think the itinerary is doable. We are used to do longer trips so this won’t be a big issue for us.

We will need to have a further think about if we stay 3 nights in Interlaken and use this as out base or leave the itinerary as we had it initially and take the ‘normal’ trains and follow the Glacier Express Route or if weather is bad we could take the route via Zurich then.

To rephrase question 4: Our current plan is to commence the trip in Interlaken and finish in St Moritz. Would it be better to commence the trip in St Moritz and finish in Interlaken considering onward journey to Venice? Reason I’m asking this is that the connection from St Moritz to Venice seems to be much longer. Also I cant seem to find any train going via Tirano and onwards to Venice via Milan. The day we would depart is 13.12? Connection from Interlaken to Venice seems pretty straight forward. Can you help with this?

We looked at flying as we though we then go from Zurich via Lucerne to Interlaken and this seemed faster compared to the train.

We continue reviewing the other information and hope to book the trip all in by the end of the month.

“We looked at flying as we though we then go from Zurich via Lucerne to Interlaken and this seemed faster compared to the train.”

There is an ICE275 that goes direct from Frankfurt to Interlaken in 5 hours. Zurich Airport to Interlaken via Luzern takes 3 hours minimum. You can easily waste 2 hours mucking about in airports and that’s not even including the flight time. Take the train and enjoy the scenery.

The SBB timetable doesn’t seem to be able to handle computing a route St Moritz to Venice. You may have to break it down. Attached is what DB suggests.

But by all means go the other way round if that works better for you.
