Hi – My Husband and I are flying into Switzerland, likely Zurich, on December 24th for 6 nights and leaving on Dec 30th. I am trying to plan an itinerary to see the best the country has to offer. Weather is a concern and I don’t want to be moving hotels every night. I’d like to set up two hubs over the 6 night period.

I’ve researched a ton and I am having a hard time picking the best two spots to maximize our vacation. I’d like to see Bern, Lucerne, and pick a spot to ski for a couple days. We’d also like to do a scenic train ride. I’m having a hard time determining the best cities to stay in to accomplish that. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best two cities to have a true Swiss vacation and experience?

    Thank you.

    Hi Liz96 –

    Welcome to my Swiss Alps.

Quick answer, because I’m about to catch my flight.

Luzern and Inerlaken. Better than Interlaken, one of the villages in the Jungfrau region, but it is likely that all accommodations are bo0ked by now. Maybe not.

I like Wengen. So does Kim:

The Bahnhofstrasse in Zuerich has spectacular Christmas lights.

So this is what we are thinking, curious on your thoughts.

24-27 Grindelwald(for skiing and outdoor adventures)

    27-29 Lucerne

    29-30 Bern

Do you think this timeline is doable? I don’t want to be running around too much, but will this allow us enough time in each city?

    Thanks!

    Hi Liz

You will find the timetable useful:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

It will tell you that Bern is 1 hour from Luzern on the hour, or 1 hour and 20 or 30 minutes for several other trains per hour.

If you don’t want to stay in too many places, stay in Luzern. It is a good base for day trips.

You might find that the time in Grindelwald is not enough, if the changeable weather is not good on your chosen days.

    Hi Liz,

Will your trip be this year or next year?

If it’s this year, before you get much further with planning, I suggest checking out the accommodation possibilities in Grindelwald. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year, and a lot of accommodation will now be booked out. Also, some hotels require a minimum stay of about 5 days over Christmas.
