    Hello.

We are arriving by plane to Zurich 9th October and flying out of Geneva 16th October. We have 2 young children with us. 18months and 3 years so are looking for child friendly stuff to do. Would like to see the mountains, get trains up the mountains, go on cable car trips, see some nice mountain scenery and some easy pram friendly short walking trips. As travelling from place to place is hard with 2 kids and luggage we want to stay somewhere where we can base most of our day trips from and then perhaps spend the last couple of nights around Geneva looking around that area. So we would like to stay somewhere that is on the way on the train journey from Zurich to Geneva (or at least not that far out the way) that we could do all the above mentioned things. Where would people recommend? Would Lucerne be a good base?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Cheers

    Anna

Hi Anna and welcome to MySwissalps!

Yes, I think Luzern (local German spelling) would be a great base for you. Look here for a list of recommended activities. You should have little trouble going up into the nearby mountains as well as having some child friendly museums, like the Swiss Transport museum (all listed on the link above).

Another town you may find enjoyable is Montreux – I think most of your time should be spent at these two towns and then the last one or 2 nights in Geneva.

As for train travel, I would look at an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass for you and your partner (the kids will be free everywhere). The STP will cover most trips you probably will want to do (as well as many museums entrances) and will partially cover some other trips. For a list and map of validity areas click here.

Train trips can be planned with the Swiss railways timetable here.
