Hi Jodavid,

The answer lies in how far you are willing to travel from Brienz for your trips. Up to 3 hours by train and you could go anywhere in Switzerland. Use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out any and all trips. For ideas on what to do around Brienz click here.

For ideas in the various regions of Switzerland look at these at an overview here.

The Bernese Oberland (of which Brienz is a part) and the Jungfrau region (within the Bernese Oberland) is probably the most popular region especially for mountain activities and scenery. If that is what you are looking for?

A Swiss rail pass of some sort would be advantageous if you are traveling regularly by train, bus, boat, cable car etc. Which one depends on where in the country you are traveling. There is the Swiss Travel Pass that covers most of the country and then different regional passes such as the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland which covers most travel around Brienz.

In order to pick the best rail pass for your trip read our page on how to choose the best rail pass. You'll need to decide where you will be traveling to during your trip and do the math to compare point to point tickets vs. different rail passes.

Axalp is about 30 mins by Post Bus from Brienz. ( fun ride)

There is a nice hike (walk) on the wood carvers trail.

Check the bus schedule before you go as it doesn't run that often.

There is a decent restaurant if you miss the bus or just want a bite.

Not sure if you're Sherlock Holmes fans but Meiringen is a short bus ride from Brienz and is the home of the Richenbach Falls and there is a Sherlock Holmes museum a short walk from the train station. Also near Meiringen is the Aareschluch walk thru a gorge similar to Glacier Canyon outside of Grindenwald. Seven days in Brienz seems like a long time but the train service to Interlaken and Luzern is frequent.

Was trying to save them a travel day on their rail pass for such a short journey. But you are correct that train service is available.

I did not note that they had chosen a pass to buy, if any..

One could use either a rail pass or cash on the either bus or on the train.

I do agree with you , that they could "save" a day if they have a Flex Pass. If they have pass that runs for a fixed period of time, I guess that they might as well use it?

You might enjoy a round trip by PostBus through 4 passes of the Central Alps. This full-day excursion departs from and returns to Meiringen (less than 15 minutes on the train from Brienz). It is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

If you are interested, you can read my trip report about it here:

Another beautiful PostBus trip from Meiringen goes to Grindelwald via the Grosse Scheidegg. Most of it is free with the Swiss Travel Pass. I have also written a trip report about that one, which you can read here if you are interested:
