Hi, I will be flying in with the family to Paris Disneyland and will head to Switzerland for 7D early July. Family of four with two young kids 6 & 3. Itinerary as below :

  • Day 1 - Travel from Paris Disneyland to Montreux - Montreux Accommodation
  • Day 2 - Chocolate Train / Self travel to Callier Nestle & Gruyere Cheese - Montreux Accommodation
  • Day 3 - Glacier 3000 - Montreux Accommodation
  • Day 4 - Travel to Interlaken, Interlaken City Sights - Interlaken Accommodation
  • Day 5 - Bern Day Trip - Shopping - Interlaken Accommodation
  • Day 6 - Brienz Steam Train - Interlaken Accommodation
  • Day 7 - Travel from Interlaken to CDG

I am having issues with :

1) Montreux accommodation - Not too many options and very expensive. Any other nearby town/city with reasonably priced, clean & comfortable accommodation which allows easy access to Chocolate Train / Glacier 3000?

2) Skipping Jungfraujoch as I had been there previously, electing to have the kids experience snow in Glacier 3000 instead.

3) Any other must-see / must-do in Interlaken area? Wouldn't mind scenery, farms, or simply walking along grassy hills. Thank you for your valuable advice.

<<"Montreux accommodation - Not too many options and very expensive. ">A partial answer.

You are absolutely correct. If you stay in a famous tourist ( or business meeting ) venue in Switzerland, you will find high prices.

A look at the map and a search by - town by towns - might help.

You also might go up to Glion or Caux and check prices. Have you considered staying at Rochers de Naye?

Maybe Ballenbuel?

High mountains are not the prime location for grassy hills. But, the Emmental, which is fill of grassy hills, is a bit off your trajectory.

Hotel de Chailly is not that expensive, but it's between Montreux and Vevey. I'm not sure what your budget is, but you may want to check the Bon-Port Hotel as well, which is better located. Nearby Vevey is pretty nice as well and has a few cheaper options.

There is not much to see in Interlaken, but a whole lot in the area around Interlaken: myswissalps.com/ interlaken/activities.

Sorry can I check on what is the weather at glaciers? Do we need to be decked in full winter garb (3 layers) even in summer?

You'd best expect it to be chilly and bring layers. A winter jacket is not a must for general sightseeing; thinner layers will work. If you're lucky there will be sun and not much wind. In that case it can feel pretty warm even there. Always bring sun glasses and suntan lotion.
